The tutor introduces himself

“Now Victoria, I would normally punish behaviour like yours this morning, with the cane or strap, but as I said, since we had not been introduced, I have been lenient. I will now introduce myself and I will then explain to you the rules that I expect you to follow, and the reward that you can expect for any transgressions. “
“My name is Stephen Bartlett; you however will at all times call me Sir. This is the first rule. When I enter a room, you will stand and face me, and curtsey. You will remain standing, with your hands by your side, until I give you permission to sit. This is the second rule. “
“You will obey any instruction I give you without question and without hesitation. This is the third rule. “
“Fourthly you will not initiate any conversation with me or anyone else in the house without my permission, nor will you express any personal opinion unless specifically asked for that opinion.”
“Fifthly, you will not leave the room without my permission and, under no circumstances, will you leave the house unaccompanied.”
“Next, you will read only material which I have approved”
“Finally I will expect you to exhibit a range of suitable feminine skills. You will play the piano each day for me. You will provide me with examples of your embroidery skills each week. I understand that you also have some artistic skill, so we will have a painting session occasionally.”
“Is this completely clear?”
Victoria listened to this list of rules in silence, her face a mixture of incredulity and anger.
“You must be completely insane, both you and my guardian”
