Teddie looked around at his fellow investigators seated at their customary table at Junes. Everyone was being strangely silent. The guys weren't making eye contact with the girls, though Yosuke and Yu had strange little grins on their faces. The girls, for their part, were all watching the boys like hawks and seemed to gathered around Yukiko a bit more closely than usual. Almost protectively. Yukiko herself was standing up rather than sitting with the others. her hands clamped around her skirt and her face totally red.
"So...." Teddie began.
"Ted, telling you as a friend. Don't. Ask." Yosuke said. "If you value your life."
"Uh...okay." Teddie said in confusion. "But then what are we supposed to talk about?"
"Well, the reason we're having this meeting is for Yukiko's sake." Yu began, risking a quick glance in her direction. "You said something about seeing the Midnight Channel last night?"
"What?" Yukiko said, clearly preoccupied. "Oh. Right. Yeah. I...um...I did."
There was a long silence.
"So...you think someone's gonna be kidnapped?" Kanji prodded.
"Huh? Oh. No. Not anything like that. It wasn't like that." Yukiko muttered.
"Then someone's already been thrown in??" Kanji said in alarm.
"No! Or...I mean...it doesn't seem like it? It was...weirder than usual." Yukiko said.
Naoto sighed. "Yukiko-san, I realize your ordeal this morning was unpleasant, but please try to focus. Your the only one who saw any details last night. If we're going to be any help at all we need as much information as possible."
"How am I supposed to..." Yukiko snapped, then took in a breath. "Fine. There are some things I won't get into. You....know how the Channel can be. It got a little personal."
"Well, sure, we understand." Chie chimed in. "But we're all friends here. You know you can trust us. We've basically already seen the worst parts of one another, right? Its not like there's anything left to see that would change our opinions of you."
"And there are a few things we really liked seeing." Yosuke muttered under his breath, then coughed in alarm as he found himself stared down by four pairs of female eyes filled with ****. "Uhh...heh...umm...anyway! Just skip over the details and give us the short version!"
"Okay. I think I saw a ghost." Yukiko said.
She went on to explain as much of her encounters in the bath, the mirror, and the conversation with the apparent ghostly Shadow of Yamano. She tried to omit as much of her humiliations last night as possible, and she was reasonably confident that the boys did not read between the lines. Although the carefully neutral expression Yu was giving her suggested he might have gleaned a few of the details despite her efforts. She couldn't help but blush at that thought.
"Guess that explains all those weird questions earlier. But if there really is a ghost...what do we do?" Teddie asked. "We can't use our Personas in the real world, after all."
"I'm hoping there's a way to appease her and put her to rest." Yukiko said simply. "And if there is a Shadow wandering around, then..."
"Then we stop it." Yosuke chimed in.
Yukiko glanced in his direction and gasped softly to herself. All day and throughout the meeting he had been studiously avoiding eye contact with her, but occasionally stolen little glances at her when he thought she wasn't paying attention. At such times he had a stupid, pervy look that made her blood boil and her cheeks burn with shame. Now though, he was looking directly at her, no oggling or leering. He looked...determined. Serious. Sad?
"We know where Yamano died in the TV world. That creepy room with the noose. So hunting around there won't be that hard. Teddie should be enough for a patrol tonight. Me, Kanji, and Yu will go in tonight and see what we can see. The rest of you do what Yukiko suggested and keep her company tonight. See what happens. We can trade stories tomorrow and figure out our next move."
"Whoa. Check out mister assertive over here! What's the deal, Yosuke? When did you get so proactive about this stuff?" Chie chided.
"Don't you get it? We've been assuming all this time that Shadows only stay around long enough to kill their other self and pop out of existence. If Ms. Yamano's Shadows is still around, whether this ghost stuff is real or not...then what if she's not the only one?" Yosuke said, his voice breaking.
"Oh." Chie said softly.
"You think Ms. Konishi might be..." Naoto began.
"If Saki-senpai is...still trapped in that world, then I..." Yosuke said softly. "We can't ignore this. We need to figure out if this is possible and deal with it!"
The table was silent for a moment, before Yu cleared his throat.
"We know the Midnight Channel is connected with the thoughts of the viewer. If Yukiko had already encountered something she thought was a ghost, then its possible the Channel just responded to those fears and showed her something based on those thoughts."
"You think it wasn't real?" Yukiko asked.
"I think at best it offers a distorted picture to its audience. Naoto's lab, Kanji's bathhouse, Rise's nightclub...we've seen first hand how warped that world can be." Yu said.
" 'Scoring a hot stud'?" Teddie said with a smirk before Rise smacked him on the back of his head.
"Yosuke's right. We need to investigate further. Just remember- the whole point of that world is to hide the truth behind the fog- literally or otherwise. The information we've gained from the Channel has been helpful, but its always been distorted and never straightforward. There could be a Shadow on the loose here, or it could just be an illusion the Channel created specifically for Yukiko."
Unknown to any of the investigators, they would see a grim first hand example of the latter during their confrontation with Namatame, a vision of his Shadow that would nearly goad them into becoming murderers themselves.
"In short, make no assumptions, be logical and keep an open mind." Naoto said. "The qualities of a good detective. The basic principles still apply, supernatural elements aside."
"All right. Let's do this. Stay safe tonight, girls. We'll reconvene in the morning." Yosuke said with a nod.
The girls waited until the others were out of sight, then noticeably dropped their serious faces.
"Soooo...what were all those little details you didn't want the guys to hear? Must be juicy for you to be so tight lipped, huh?" Rise asked.
Yukiko blushed more deeply, took in a breath, and began to explain her awful ordeal.
