Chapter 20
by
Sentinel_011
What does she do?
The plan revealed.
As time comes to a stop, Ilyanna falls to the ground.
"Are you insane?! I just told you that drawing too much power at once is dangerous! You could have killed yourself! More importantly, you could have killed yourself in a way I couldn't resurrect you!" You shout.
"We can talk about that later. Right now, will you please just help me stand?" she asks, a pitiful look on her face. You help her up immediately.
"What the- What the hell is going on?!" Jowan screams, dagger in hand.
"You're... you're welcome," Ilyanna says, rising shakily to her feet even with your help.
Jowan and Lily turn to face you, both with looks of **** bewilderment on their faces.
"Wait. You did this?" Lily asks.
"Of course," Ilyanna wheezes. Now that she's gotten her feet under her, you back off. She rests her weight on her staff.
"How?!" Jowan exclaims, "Magic like this isn't possible! Even the Tevinter Magister who broke into the Golden City couldn't pull off something like this!"
Ilyanna takes a deep breath. You can plainly see the effort to maintain the spell is almost as bad as the effort to cast it in the first place.
"Normally, you'd be right. But... Well, let's just say I have help," Ilyanna says, "It doesn't matter. You need to run."
"What?" the two of them ask.
"I can't maintain this spell for more than a few minutes. You two need to take that time and escape. I'll conjure an Illusion in your place to make it look like you did a spell to escape."
"Wait, so this was all... this was all an act? An elaborate trick?" Jowan asks.
"Of course it was," Ilyanna says softly, "Jowan, you are my best friend. I'd never really betray you. But after you get out, I still need to live here. And of course, you'd never go for a plan like this, even if you did think I was capable of magic like this. Plus, I needed your reactions to be genuine, because Jowan if there is one thing that's true, you are a terrible liar."
Jowan shakes his head in disbelief.
"But won't they blame you for breaking my phylactery?"
Ilyanna smiles and pulls out the vial of blood she stole from the vault. Waving her hand over the top, she changes the name written along the label to "Jowan."
"Welp. Looks like I tricked you by switching the labels," Ilyanna says with a smirk, "I will need a bit of your blood to make this work, but diluted as it is they'll never be able to get a solid location on you. The best they'd be able to do is know you were still in Ferelden. And Ferelden is a big place."
Jowan's face slowly breaks out into a smile.
"Ilyanna, you are the most brilliant, devious, and wonderful person I have ever met," he says, taking Lily's hand in his, "We'll be in your debt forever. You know that, don't you?"
"Of course," she says with a smirk, "Now, about that blood."
Jowan takes his dagger and pokes it into his hand, drawing a small bit of blood. Ilyanna takes it and mixes it into the vial, then seals it. Technically, Ilyanna isn't correct. With even a diluted sample of Jowan's blood, they could track him to within 100 feet of his actual location. But you want nothing more than for her to succeed, so who can blame you if you change the way the world works just this once?
When Ilyanna is done, she looks at her friend and pulls him into a hug.
"Take good care of yourself, Ilyanna," Jowan whispers.
"You too, Jowan."
When they separate, she holds onto his wrist. She presses a finder deliberately onto one of the scars from his Blood Magic and gives him a dark look. Jowan takes her meaning. She is and always will be his friend. But she knows he is really a Blood Mage, and if she ever hears of him using Blood Magic again, that won't save him. Jowan nods respectfully.
With another quick hug to Lily, Ilyanna waves the couple on their way and bids them goodbye.
"Well. Almost done here. Just need a little bit of power to make the illusion and we'll be all done."
"We are definitely going to have a talk when this is over. I love you, Ilyanna, but I won't have you killing yourself with my power," You say, no longer bothering to hide your presence as you appear before her.
Ilyanna sighs.
"I know," she says, "Now would you mind making that illusion for me? I'm having trouble moving my arms."
You frown, but do as she requests, conjuring a programed image of what transpired in the game that will execute when time begins.
"Done. You can release the spell, now."
"Thanks, Michael. Really, I mean it, I never would have been able to do this without you."
The spell begins to fade and you fade out with it, giving her a soft smile as you return to the Fade.
"I know."
