Chapter 23

To where does she lead you?

The nurse's office

"Let's go next door to the camp nurse's office where we can speak privately" Cindy said as she gathered her paperwork and placed it back into one of the desk drawers.

The nurses's office was just next door, and was rarely occupied. The camp didn't have a full-time nurse and the one-room shack remained unused unless someone suffered an injury that required more than a Band-Aid or an aspirin.

Cindy pulled out her key ring and fingered through her many keys until she found the correct one which unlocked the old wooden front door. Windows on opposite sides of the room were blocked by wooden blinds which kept out the morning sun. Cindy flipped the wall switch and the lights attached to the ceiling fan above turned on. The fan itself began to turn slowly and quietly, providing a gentle breeze.

"I can understand you are nervous talking to me about this Donna. But just try take it easy, ok?"

"Yes ma'am." you replied. "You can just call me Cindy" . "Yes Cindy".

Cindy climbed up to the middle of the tube-frame medical bed and sat cross legged. She patted her hand on the bed, gesturing for you to sit next to her.

Unsure about whether you could manage to sit cross-legged in your short tube skirt, you sat on the edge of the bed with your legs dangling off the side, facing 90 degrees away from Cindy.

"Are you ready to talk about this now?" she asked in a warm, gentle tone, placing a hand on your right shoulder.

"Yes" you answered confidently. You attempt to find the words to explain how you got into this mess. "Cindy I know all the lying and sneaking around was wrong. But I'm coming clean to you now. I just want to get it all out so that you know the truth and I can stop sneaking around."

"And the whole situation with Sylvia just got out of hand." you continued. "She said I had to follow her instructions or she was going to tell you the truth and I was just scared about what would happen so I played along. But I now I realized that I just needed to tell you the truth".

Cindy smiles at you warmly as you explain yourself, and you find yourself getting more and more relaxed. She was taking everything very well. If you were lucky, maybe she would make things easy on you and just tell your parents you got sent to the wrong camp by mistake and they would come pick you up without any fanfare.

How does counselor Cindy respond?
