The next morning

It is a deep sleep, and you waken the following morning refreshed and hungry.

You wash and dress, then decide to head downstairs for some breakfast.

But instead, when you open the bedroom door, you see several gendarmes--French policemen--milling about in the hallway.

In broken English, they ask you questions, demanding if you know anything at all about the **** of Count Rudolpho.

Shocked, you reply that you've been asleep most of the night and didn't see or hear anything other than a man and woman quarreling in the hallway.

After a few more questions, the gendarmes seem satisfied and allow you to leave.

Thus it is that you eventually leave for England and totally unaware of what actually happened that night.
