Chapter 4
by Ator
Follow the guys? The girls? Or does this prove to be uneventful?
The guys
As the boys rounded the final 50 yards, the clearing with the cabins came into view. All at once Chris came to a dead stop, only having the presence of mind to not drop his expensive bags in the dirt.
"WHAT. THE. ACTUAL. FUCK?"
He had heard the word "cabin" thrown around all morning. The only image he had ever considered was something like his family's mountain cabin, maybe smaller. He wasn't naive enough to think it would have a hot tub, or fireplace. But this, this was a chicken coop.
The cabins were set a few yards apart from one another, each numbered and having 3 steps leading up to a wooden door. From there it looked...hollow. Large window screens filled up the majority of the walls in every direction, with a large wood awning above each. No signs of glass anywhere to be seen. No AC units, no kitchen, and one dingy yellow light with a metal shade, hanging above the door. Encased in webs, it looked like a bug graveyard up there.
Chris only snapped out of his shock when he heard the click of a camera.
"Peter Parker" pulled the camera down, grinning. "Sorry man, couldn't pass up on that look on your face."
Chris was still in too much shock to even get pissed. "No! Nononono. This can't be it! Two months living in...in...THIS?"
"Remember. It's for the kids," Alan said, with another chuckle. He motioned to the other guys to follow him into one of the buildings. They all walked in slowly looking around. The floor was wooden a few leaves and webs in the various corners. 11 wooden lockers with metal hasps were stacked in the one corner that actually had part of a wall that went to the ceiling. There also a single bulb hanging from the ceiling. "Welcome to your cabin," he said.
Chris dropped his bags as he came in. "Cabin? This isn't a cabin. This isn't even a shed. It barely qualifies as an all-seasons porch from the ghetto. " Robby glanced up sharply, ready for what came next. I'm not spending my summer dealing with some fucking racist, he thought.
Alan interrupted. "Pretty simple. Get a footlocker, change into your work clothes if you need to, and stow your stuff. Just make mental notes of what you'll need to clean up your cabin. And really go over the screens, unless you like getting mosquito bit. We should have patches."
"Uh Alan, what is supposed to happen when it rains?" asked Steve while raising his hand.
Alan laughed. "Man, don't be so formal. I'm not the leader here. Just have some experience is all," he said, walking over to a window. Flipping up the window sill revealed a metal lever. Alan looked at them and grinned. "Tadah!" he said, pulling up on it sharply. The heavy wooden awning came swinging down and hit the outside wall with a terrific crash. Everyone jumped at the enormous noise.
"Just be sure that's what you want to do, as these are a bitch to roll back up. I recommend doing the west side only, as that's usually the direction where the rain comes from."
Alan proceeded to show them how to wind up the heavy wood awning, before proceeding. "All right, pick a cabin and meet at the fork in 5..."
He was interrupted by the scream coming from where the girls cabins were.
Has someone been murdered?
