Chapter 2

What Finally Got You To Leave?
The glory of the intergalactic score!
Your name is Derick Holmes, a human from Mars. After hundreds of years of technology development on Earth, and a need to create more living space for the human race, Humanity has inhabited all of the planets in its solar system, with each planet being an important component to the human race.
Unfortunately for you though, Mars is nothing but an industrial planet used to power the rest of the solar system. Mars is covered in energy producing factories, including Nuclear Power Plants, Coal Plants, Hydroelectric Power Plants, and Fossil Fuel Duplication Plants. Everyone who lives on Mars is expected to work in factories until retirement, but even then, escaping from Mars or even going up into the elite status of power on Mars isn’t an easy task. Due to many regulations involved, many works have to live paycheck by paycheck, with only a curtain few rising up and leaving their lives as workers.
That’s where you come in. The sounds of steam whistling through Martian air rings through your ears as you mindlessly sit by a conveyor belt full of fossil fuel duplicates. In the year 3045, Fossil Fuels are no longer unsustainable due to Earth Patented Technology. These fossils are duplicated from a set of base fossils, which allows for infinite production as long as Mars still has dust in its surface.
While Fossil Fuels aren’t necessary for energy anymore, especially with the advent of greater nuclear power, its use is great for trading in the Galactic Federation. Other planets, especially those of non-human origin use these Fossil Fuels for their own production and energy due to how cheap it is, and that several planets have natural protections against the harmful effects of Fossil Fuels.
But anyways, you sit there, mindlessly inspecting each and every fossil that comes across you as it moves slowly down the conveyor belt. Your eyes feel heavy, like a ton of bricks were tied to your eye lashes. You struggle to stay focused as you feel both bored and tired.
Your eyes go with the **** of gravity, and close. Your imagination quickly takes over, as the steam and metallic clanks and chunks makes you think of a grand shoot out! The bag guys shoot their lasers at your badass ship while you duck and weave! With one hand full of cash and the other gripping a pistol, you gracefully move around a cramped corridor, all the while taking out bad guys like it’s nothing!
As you shoot down the last bad guy, you hear a voice coming from behind you. You turn and see a beautiful woman, dressed in nothing but a white loin cloth and pasties on her nipples.
“Oh Derick! Thank you for rescuing me!” The beautiful, curvy woman says to you.
“Don’t worry, babe! Now how about we get out of here and get you something nice, my treat!” You say, holding up the bag of cash in hand.
“Derick, please wake up!” She says in a confusingly sultry tone.
“W-What?” You reply.
“Damn it Derick, get up!” She says, this time a much more angry and masculine voice overlaps her words.
Suddenly, you feel someone slap put upside the head!
You wake up, panicked and breathing heavily as you wake up from your dream. Everything is back to the normal, boring factory job, but now your boss stands behind you with a huge frown and scolding look on his face.
“Dammit Derick, this is the third time this month! How could you be this careless!” Your boss yells at you, causing everyone else in the factory to stop what they’re doing.
You know better than to talk back to your boss, so you just stare blankly at him, in hopes he’ll calm down.
But now with everyone waiting with bated breath, your boss realizes that he has created a scene.
“Come to my office. And everyone else, get to work!” Your boss shouts, to which every worker diligently did as they were told.
“Shit…” You mutter to yourself.
You get up and follow your boss back to his office. As you walk, you notice just how different the factory portion of the factory is compared to the offices in front of the factory. While the factory is rusted and broken down, the offices are sleek and clean, like you were transported to a different building.
But nevertheless, you eventually step inside your bosses office. It’s incredibly messy with Knick Knacks everywhere, including the floor. It’s obvious to basically everyone that the boss isn’t a neat person, but he expects the best from everyone else.
You take a seat across from your bosses desk, and wait for his fat ass to sit down.
“Now, Derick… Can you please tell me why you’ve been sleeping on the job lately?” His words are laced with a repressed anger that is almost palpable to you.
“Oh, well… If I said why, you’d probably think it’s silly… hehe…” You try to deflect the question.
“Oh trust me… I’m sure it’ll be dumb, but I’m still want to know.”
You twiddle with your thumbs, thinking of the best way to phrase your response.
“You see… I sometimes go out at night…” You begin.
Your boss leans back in his chair, clasping his hands together. “Go on…”
“Well… I take this metal detector I bought a couple months ago, and, you know… search for treasure to sell…” You say, knowing just how dumb you sound.
“Oh my lord, Derick!” Your boss says, seemingly more annoyed and worried than disappointed. “Why are you spending your nights looking for treasure? It’s idiotic!”
You can’t blame your boss for feeling this way towards your “hobby,” but part of you feels like you need to defend yourself.
“What else is there to do on this fucking planet, huh?” You stand up, your brow furrows as you look at your boss with a stern expression. “Everyday it’s work, work, work, and more work! Can you blame a guy for wanting more in his life?”
Your boss begins to chuckle. “And what makes you think scanning across Martian soil’s gonna do ya? You’re better off gambling your paycheck on one of those Saturn Casinos.”
“You don’t understand! It’s just the beginning to my plan to become rich! I wanna get off this dusty rock and explore the galaxy like Jet Jetson or Magellan IXX!”
Your boss cackles in laughter, almost falling off his chair as he does so. You feel your cheeks grow red as you slowly slump down into the chair behind you.
“Whoo! Man, maybe you should save up a couple paychecks and move to Uranus. The comedy clubs there might take a liking to ya, kid!” Your boss says, beet red in the face from laughter.
“I’m serious!” You simply say, to which your boss continues to laugh.
“Okay, Kid. Tell me… How dedicated are you to this, bounty hunting, galaxy hopping lifestyle that you want so desperately?” He asks, seemingly genuine by the smile on his face.
Could this be it? Maybe he has some kind of secret to tell you, or maybe the old man is kind enough to offer you a rental space craft? Whatever it is, this could be your ticket to your dreams!
“So dedicated! I’d drop everything to do it!” You reply, to which your boss chuckles again
You fly out the front door of the factory, your butt sore from your bosses boot kicking you, literally, outside. You turn around on the ground and walk on your knees toward your boss. “Please, don’t fire me Sir!” You plead, hands clasped and legs covered in Mars dust.
“Tell me how that bounty hunting thing goes for ya! And who knows, maybe I’ll let you work again if you’re really ****!” Your boss says before shutting the doors right in front of you!
And so, you sit alone, fired and humiliated. All you can really do is get in your rover and drive home, now desperately in need for a job, or a new opportunity…
