What's next?
The Weight of a Voice
Grace's voice boomed through the room, "Get out! Get out right now!"
Marcus stood in the doorway, his face a picture of concern and confusion. He took a step forward, flowers still in hand. "Grace, what's going on? I came as soon as I heard you were hurt."
The team exchanged glances, their expressions shifting from surprise to anger as they realized who the man was.
Penny was the first to react, her voice sharp. "You heard her. Leave." The others all took a step forward, closer to Grace.
Marcus's smile didn't waver, but his eyes hardened. He took another step forward, ignoring the warnings. "I just want to make sure she's okay. I can see she's in good hands, but—"
Grace cut him off, her voice trembling with rage. "You don't get to pretend you care. You don't get to act like we're still together. Get. Out."
Marcus finally seemed to register the hostility in the room. He looked around, his smile fading as he took in the united front against him.
"I heard you were hurt," he said, his voice laden with false concern. His eyes scanned her, seeing no sign of injury. He looked back to the others in the room, their postures making it clear he wasn't welcome. "Fine, I'll go. But I'll be back. I won't leave you like this, Grace."
The room fell silent as Grace processed the weight of Marcus's intrusion and the team's immediate support. Ethan was the first to break the silence. "Grace…" He trailed off, unsure what to say.
She took a breath, her eyes unfocused on the floor as she thought. She sat down, her shoulders slumping, a tremble in her hands. "I don't know how to handle this," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I never expected him to follow me here."
Mei moved to the door. "I'm going to go after him. Make sure he leaves. I'll call you if anything happens."
Grace gave a soft nod and Mei left the room.
She looked at each of them, her gaze lingering on Ethan. "I just... I need time to process," she said, her voice steadying. "I never thought he would show up here, he shouldn't have been able to find me. The Guild Master was supposed to make sure of that." She felt Penny squeeze her hand. "I thought I had left it all behind in California."
"You did leave it behind," Penny assured her. "And we won't let him take anything from you now. You're part of this team, and we protect our own."
Ethan spoke, his voice tinged with anger. "We'll make sure he understands that he's not welcome here. If he tries to come back, we'll be ready. He won't be allowed to catch you alone."
Grace nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. "Thank you," she whispered. "I don't know what I would do without all of you."
Alice wrapped an arm around Grace's shoulders, pulling her into a gentle hug. "You never have to find out," she murmured.
Grace leaned into the embrace, feeling the warmth and strength of her teammates surrounding her. For the first time in years, she felt a sense of belonging, of safety.
"Is it okay if I grab Dr. Ali for the post healing scans, or do you want to get out of here?" Ethan asked.
Grace shook her head. "No, he's gone. We can do the scans before we leave."
Ethan left the room, his steps quick—too quick for a hospital—as he made his way down the corridor. He needed to find Dr. Ali, but more than that, he needed a moment to process everything that had just happened. The encounter with Marcus had shaken him, leaving him angry. Enraged.
He ducked into an alcove, dimly lit by the glow of vending machines. A harsh breath tore out of him. How dare Marcus show up? What should have been a moment of relief, of healing, had been completely ruined. She'd laughed, cried happy tears. What could be worse than Grace choosing to confront her fears about being controlled, only for the source of her fears to show up as soon as she did?
What gave him the right? To walk in like he belonged there. As if she hadn't run from him for a damn reason. He'd seen the way she'd reacted when he spoke. The expression of fear as she recognized his voice. What gave him the damned right to do that? He struck the vending machine with the heel of his palm, quiet enough not to draw attention, hard enough to let the frustration out.
He **** himself to breath, long and slow. Grace didn't need his anger. Another breath, and he pushed himself off the machine, moving to go find the doctor. The sooner they were out of here, the better.
Grace's eyes were fixed on the door as Ethan left. Tears welled up in her eyes and she pushed them away with the back of her hand.
"Sorry," she whispered, though nobody had asked for an apology.
Penny shook her head immediately. "Don't be. Absolutely don't."
Alice squeezed Grace again. “Hey, what you’re feeling right now? It doesn’t mean you're back there. It just means he surprised you, yea?”
Grace nodded, wiping away more tears. She let out a soft, long, exhale that sounded like her first real breath since Marcus had walked in. She looked to Alice and Penny.
"Thank you."
They stood with her in the quiet, no pressure, no questions, just presence. Grace felt the tension in her shoulders easing, not gone entirely, but loosening with the help that she knew her friends weren't going anywhere.
It only took a few minutes for Ethan and the doctor's footsteps to echo down the hall, appearing a few moments later. The doctor knocked on the door frame softly as she entered. Alice and Penny each gave Grace one last quick squeeze before moving away.
"Hello again, Grace." Dr. Ali greeted her with a kind smile. "Ethan told me you had a stressful visitor. Give me a few moments and we can have you out of here in no time."
Dr. Ali worked quickly, leads hooked up and scans run in record time. "That's all I need. If you'd like to get dressed and head down to the nurses station, they should already have the discharge forms ready for both of you."
Grace quickly dressed and the group were out of the hospital in no time at all. Mei had a taxi waiting for them as they went outside, the ride to Grace's apartment quiet.
As they arrived, Grace broke the silence. "Would you all want to stay?"
"As if we would leave you alone." Penny said, her normal joking tone replaced with sincerity.
When Grace unlocked the door, her hand trembled once, barely noticeable. Ethan was the only one who saw it. He almost reached out, but stopped himself. She walked inside first, inhaling the scent of home like it was the first safe breath she’d taken since the hospital.
Mei closed the door behind them, sliding the locks into place with a decisive click. “Okay,” she said, brushing dust from her jacket. “Rule one for tonight: nobody knocks unless they’re on the team or carrying pizza.”
That earned a small laugh from Grace. “Pizza sounds really good right now.”
“I’ll order.” Alice was already pulling out her phone. “Same as usual?”
Grace blinked. “You all know my pizza order?”
Penny grinned and nudged her shoulder. “Grace, we’ve all but moved in together. Of course we know your order.”
Grace's expression softened in a way Ethan hadn’t expected, her eyes falling to the floor as if the idea of being known, even in something as small as a pizza order, had never occurred to her.
Mei had already shrugged off her coat and was heading for the kitchen. “I’ll put on some tea. The spiced one?”
Grace gave her a nod and sank into the couch. The cushions were overstuffed and familiar, almost swallowing her whole. Penny plopped down beside her, leaving almost no space, but Grace didn’t pull away. Ethan took the armchair next to them, stretching his legs out onto the ottoman.
The room was filled with the subtle bustle of a safe evening. Alice confirming their order, Mei boiling water, Penny fishing a blanket from under the coffee table and draping it over their knees to share.
Only then did silence settle between them. Not uncomfortable. Not tense. Just… waiting.
Grace rubbed her palms together. “I didn’t think he’d come,” she finally said, voice small but steady. “I really didn’t. I thought I was far enough away. That his dad wouldn’t bother helping him again.”
“You shouldn’t have had to think about any of that at all,” Penny said bluntly, crossing her arms. “None of what happened back then was your fault.”
“I know.” Grace swallowed. “But it still feels like it is.”
Mei entered with a tray of steaming mugs. She handed one to Grace, who took it with both hands, letting the heat seep into her fingers. “Grace,” she said gently, “tonight is not about blame. Not about what you did or didn’t do. It’s about you being here. Safe. Celebrating Bonding.”
Grace closed her eyes. “I know. I do. It’s just… fresh.” She looked down at her cup, the tea rippling faintly from her unsteady grip. “He used to do this. Show up. Act like he cared. Pretend he was this… devoted partner.” She grimaced. “But only when I was cornered, or hurt. That’s when he’d swoop in.”
Ethan stiffened. “That sounds like him.”
She looked up at him, surprised. “You barely spoke to him.”
“I didn’t need to,” Ethan said. “I saw your face when he walked in.”
The room went quiet again, but heavier this time.
Grace gave a slow, shaky breath, taking a sip of her tea. “I hate that he still gets to do this to me. That I still react like that.”
Mei perched on the arm of the couch. “Grace, trauma doesn’t disappear just because you moved on. It doesn’t mean he still owns any part of you. It means you survived him.” She nudged her knee lightly. “And you’re allowed to feel whatever comes up.”
Alice walked into the living room. “Pizza’s thirty minutes out,” she declared, dropping onto the other end of the couch. “Which means we have exactly thirty minutes to collectively bully Grace into watching the worst movie in our combined library.”
Penny lit up. “Oooh, the terrible space opera?”
“No, the _other _terrible space opera.”
Grace laughed. “You guys are ridiculous.”
“You love it,” Penny said.
Grace hesitated, then nodded. “Yeah. I do.”
The tension in the room loosened a little more.
Ethan watched her carefully, fingers tapping absently against his knee. He wanted to say something, anything, to make her feel safe. But every phrase felt either too soft or too heavy. So he stayed quiet, letting the others fill the space.
When the doorbell finally rang half an hour later, Penny declared, “Battle positions!” and marched to the door with exaggerated stealth. She opened it a crack, peeked out dramatically, then swung it wide to reveal a confused delivery driver.
“Is it the cheesy prophecy?” Penny demanded.
The driver blinked. “Uh… yeah, two large?”
“Enter!” she said solemnly, taking the boxes. She shut the door with a flourish. “The pizza has chosen us.”
Grace played into the bit. "The time of pineapple and ham is upon us?"
"I'm afraid it is," Penny reverently placed the pizzas down. "I fear barbecue chicken has come as well."
They spread food across the coffee table. Mei dimmed the lights. Alice queued the horrifically bad movie, complete with questionable special effects and dramatic monologues delivered with all the sincerity of a high-school play.
Grace leaned into Penny on one side, Alice on the other. Ethan could see the exact moment her shoulders finally dropped, when she allowed herself to melt into the moment rather than brace for something else to happen.
Halfway through the movie, Grace spoke softly. “You know… I’ve always been scared that I’d bring trouble with me. That I’d drag it into whatever life I tried to build.”
Ethan looked up, meeting her eyes in the flickering glow of the TV.
“And tonight proved I did,” she whispered.
“No,” he said immediately, quicker and louder than he intended. He sat forward, elbows on his knees. “Grace, trouble showed up because Marcus doesn’t know how to let go. That isn’t your fault. You didn’t choose him showing up. You didn’t choose any of this.”
She stared at him, meeting his gaze.
“And we’re here,” Ethan added, voice gentler now. “Not because you dragged trouble behind you. Because we care about you. Because you’re our friend. Because you’re part of this team.” His jaw tightened. “And because you deserve a hell of a lot better than spending your evening thinking you’re responsible for the actions of a man like that.”
“Thank you,” she murmured.
On screen, an alien exploded into pixels, causing Penny to pump her fist. “Yes! Justice!”
Grace laughed and let her head fall back onto the couch.
The evening unfolded softly after that. More laughter. More blankets. Grace gradually leaning until she was all but resting against Penny’s shoulder. Mei dozed in a chair, pizza crusts left on the table. Alice narrated dramatic scenes in snobbish accents. Ethan’s anger faded, happy to focus on celebrating Grace's commitment to the team.
By the time the credits rolled, she looked calmer. Not healed, not completely okay, but not alone.
She looked around at all of them, at the team that had become something more and whispered, almost to herself, “Maybe I really did leave it all behind.”
Ethan caught her eye. “You did,” he said. “And when he tries to drag it back into your life, he’ll have to get through all of us.”
Grace smiled and for the first time since the hospital, it reached her eyes.
“Good,” she said. “Because I’m done being afraid.”
