The rain beats down on the cold, empty streets, at this time of night, normal folk don’t feel safe leaving their homes.
The time between midnight and 5:00AM belongs to the freaks, the capes and you.
You’ve been sitting in this alley for the last 20 minutes, watching the garbage slowly grow soggy under the pressure of the rain.
The door next to you creaks open, revealing the familiar sight of Kat, the woman you’ve been running with for the last couple of weeks.
She wears a cheap party store mask over her face, a purple cat with yellow eyes and a rictus grin.
She props open the door with a brick and you make your way inside, working your way through the back room of the 3rd national bank, a sprawling complex with a lobby complete with marble floors and tall pillars.
You find yourself faced with the large vault door, probably the oldest thing in this metropolitan stronghold.
The only thing that’s getting that door open is a lot of explosives or a key, and seeing as this is supposed to be a no complications job, you get to searching.
The only place the key would be held at this hour is the security room.
Up until now you’ve been able to dodge the security cameras by sticking to the shadows but going to the security room will mean confronting the guards.
A big place like this would keep at minimum 2 guards on night shift, meaning you’ll have to get confrontational for this job.
Picking them off separately won’t work, it’s protocol to radio in regularly when on patrol.
So you move on creeping to the security room towards the front of the building, luckily most of the security measures have been dealt with by Kat.
From what little you know of her, she’s something of a security specialist, you had always imagined that she was a pro once.
Like some kind of master assassin or a government ghost that the ‘important’ people don’t want you to know about.
You reach the front of the bank, a large lobby that could only ever be comfortable to the upper crust.
Ahead you spot the security room, a room that sits just to the right of the front door, columns of light spew into the lobby from its various windows.
Through the windows you spit a pair of guards, neither of which appear very alert, one who scrolls slowly through their phone and the other looking half asleep as she watches the monitor.
You stick to the darkness as you both approach the booth, walking the border where light and dark meet.
Soon you’re close enough to simply duck under the windows and round the structure to its door.
Finally you enter, creeping inside you stop near the guard staring at the monitors, they look so out of it that they don’t notice your fingers working on their key ring.
Just as you’re about to unhook it from her work pants you hear your partner shout behind you.
“Hands in the air, Now!”
Both the guards and you snap around at the source of the noise, Kat stands there holding a gun.
This wasn’t part of the plan, this was supposed to be an in and out mission and certainly not one you bring a fucking gun to!
“Let’s see those keys, now!” You can do nothing but go along with her act, standing and leaning back against one of the windows, arms crossed.
“I’d do what she says lady, moneys ensured, your safety isn’t” you says trying to keep your cool.
The keys are tossed and both you and Kat back out of the room.
While you’re calculating the amount of time you have left til the cops or capes get here a shot rips.
The man who had been scrolling through his phone takes a bullet and the woman falls to his side assessing the damage.
“You can either call the cops or keep him alive, choice is on you!”
This is fucking crazy, not only did she bring a gun she also used it! If you get caught your going down for 10 years minimum!
Shit, if the judge is feeling overzealous you might get life! All because this crazy bitch got blood hungry!
“The hell were you thinking?! If this shit gets tied back to us we’re fucked!”
“Oh please, this job has been flawless, they aren’t tying shit to us!”
“This is the last time I work with your sloppy ass!” How could she be so unconcerned with the prospect of serious jail time?!
You both race to the vault fumbling for the keys as you draw near the titanium door.
On the fifth try you hear a click and begin the great labor of pushing the door open, far enough to fit inside.
You’ve never seen so much cash in one place in your whole life, hell if you piled together every dollar you’ve ever had it still wouldn’t stand in comparison to this trove.
You both head inside stuffing as much cash as you can into your rucksacks until you start to fear if you’ll be able to carry it all.
“Alright, that’s it, let’s dip” she says as she heaves her bag over her shoulder and with that you both begin your trek back to the alley.
The rain hasn’t let up sense your last visit, if it keeps up like this there’s gonna be a flood alert.
You’ve almost reached the end of the alley when you hear something, the unmistakable sound of a gun cocking.
“Guess you were right, this is the last time you’re working with me…”
A loud pop sounds from the alley, something that will most certainly go amiss on a night like this.
You fall to your knees clutching at your chest, you’re not doctor but it doesn’t look good for you.
You hear the patter of boots on puddles and fall over onto your side as your rucksack is ripped from you, the greatest score of your life torn from your grasp.
Though maybe that’s the least of your concerns.
She gives you one last look before she takes off into the night, leaving you alone to bleed out in this shitty alley.
Just as your vision starts to fail you, a figure steps out from the shadows, a man that looks ageless, neither old nor young, with features that seem to shift every so often.
Before you pass out you hear “This is not your fate, young lady”
