The Morale-Boosting Feast Begins
The stale air of the stairwell gave way to the rich, complex aroma of roasting meat and herbs as Michael pushed open the heavy door. Sophia followed close behind, her dark eyes widening slightly. The Social Area buzzed with low conversation and the clatter of utensils, a stark contrast to the oppressive silence elsewhere in the building.
They headed straight for the cleared space near the far wall. Some of them, probably Surya Patel and Jeremy Carter, had hauled every available chair and table into a rough U-shape, backed against three solid walls of the building. It offered decent cover; the open side faced the expansive, now slightly murky swimming pool up ahead, which itself dropped away to the balcony overlooking the devastated city.
"Smells incredible," Sophia breathed, stepping beside Michael. She gestured towards the pool. "And that thing looks…almost inviting right now. Shame it's just standing water." Her voice held a wistful note.
Michael nodded absently, his gaze fixed on the watery expanse. "Mmm. We'll need to drain it soon. It's not potable by now, but maybe we can recycle the water for baths so that we don't waste as much of our drinking water on that while we have that option…" His mind flickered through possibilities before the approaching group pulled him back to the present.
"Michael! And...Sophia, was it?" Melissa Carter said, her voice was warm and her smile genuine despite the tired lines around her eyes.
She wiped her hands on a stained apron. Behind her flowed the familiar faces: her husband, Jeremy Carter, solid and watchful; their kids, Alyssa bouncing slightly with nervous energy and Jonathan looming tall beside her.
Then there was the entire Patel family: the parents, Surya and Parvati; their eldest daughter, Divya, who you recall had joined her father's business as a carpenter, in a conversation with the middle sister, Aanya, who seemed to have taken a break from her nursing duties to come eat, while the petite Anjali seemed to be glossing over a book about merit badges from her time in the Girl Scouts, perhaps trying to brainstorm ideas from skills she had learned in her time there to make herself more useful.
Further in the back, Alicia Sanchez and her younger sister Gabriella huddled close, and Jade Jones, offering a tentative wave, her gaze mildly worried as she looked towards the door as if expecting her husband Allen, who was helping Lieutenant Mills and Emily Karlsson patrol the perimeter for the time being.
Anjali piped up first, relief clear in her tone. "The Cruz doctors returned to our apartment after they picked theirs. They took over watching Sergeant Vanders. They said her vitals are stable, considering. Garcia and Zhang decided to go help Lieutenant Mills sweep the perimeter outside for now but said that they should be back before the food gets too cold."
"Good," Michael acknowledged, his eyes sweeping over the laden tables. Platters held steaming venison steaks, rich gravy pooled around them, alongside roasted root vegetables scavenged from dwindling stocks, and surprisingly fresh-looking greens Alicia must have coaxed from her small hydroponic rig in her own apartment, reminding you that you really needed to speak with the main hydroponic student of your group to ask what she will need to expand her indoor farming operations within the building.
Regardless, your eyes and nose soon wandered towards the direction of the centerpiece of the feast: a massive stew pot, still bubbling gently, filled with the tougher cuts, simmered tender, of the exhausted deer that you were informed Team 3 had put out of their misery before your own team had returned from your own mission. The scent was intoxicating, a promise of warmth and sustenance in the cold reality. "You all worked fast. Looks amazing."
Parvati Patel beamed, adjusting her own apron. "We focused on the venison first, like you said. Perishable. And those greens Alicia grew…a blessing." She gestured towards the Sanchez sisters.
Jade nodded vigorously. "Melissa and Parvati did most of the heavy lifting with the cooking. The rest of us chopped, stirred, hauled tables…" She glanced at Gabriella, who was carefully arranging napkins. "Even Gabriella found her rhythm peeling potatoes."
Melissa flushed slightly under your gaze. "It was a team effort. Jonathan and Alyssa helped Surya and Jeremy move the big tables. Divya and Aanya prepped the meat with Jade. Alicia managed the greens."
"It smells and looks incredible," Michael repeated, letting his appreciation show. He met Melissa’s, Parvati’s, and Jade’s eyes in turn. "Seriously, good work. All of you. This feast? Exactly what we needed. A morale boost, a reminder we’re still human and that we can still have good days ahead if we work hard and smart with the cards we are dealt."
You saw the pride flicker in their expressions, the subtle straightening of shoulders among the group. The claimed residents seemed to now thrive more on your approval, a fundamental shift woven into them by the power of your claim.
"Well, if that's the case, then they have definitely earned my approval for this one so I might as well let them know," You thought to yourself as Sophia shifted beside you, her shoulder brushing your arm lightly.
You clapped your hands once, the sound sharp in the space. "Alright, listen up. I’ve got things to say, a proper speech, but only when everyone else that we are expecting to come is here. Mills, Garcia, Zhang, Allen, Foreman’s team, the Cruz doctors…they’re wrapping up essential duties. And some of our new recruits are still settling in. Some will have to keep at it, and we will save some food to send their way, but the rest will arrive soon. Until then?" You gestured broadly at the steaming food. "Don’t let this go cold on my account. Serve yourselves. Eat. You’ve earned it."
A ripple of relieved agreement went through them. The pragmatic command cut through any lingering hesitation. Plates were grabbed, serving spoons clinked against platters, and the low buzz of conversation rose again, warmer now, infused with the primal satisfaction of imminent food.
You stepped back slightly, leaning against the cool concrete wall near the pool overlook. You watched on as they moved: Melissa ladling the stew with efficient grace, Jeremy helping Alyssa pile vegetables high on her plate, Parvati fussily rearranging a platter, Jade accepting a slice of venison from Divya with a grateful smile, and Gabriella carefully selecting the smallest piece of meat. Sophia hesitated for a second, catching your eye, then joined Alicia near the stew pot.
A small, undeniable warmth spread through your chest. Not just the smell of food, but the sight of order, of provision, of the group you now lead functioning smoothly, gratefully, because of your decisions. The canned and dehydrated food, along with their bottled water reserves that they got from that classified supply depot, made for a potentially risky but quite rewarding supply run. And that was without also counting the fuel secured for the generators that will help keep the freezers and refrigerators running. Or the new people he saved and recruited along the way.
All thanks to the structure you managed to impose somehow. It still gave you mixed feelings, but at least it worked. They were safe, fed, and supplied with power. For now, at least.
You watched them settle at the tables, plates full, the first tentative bites being taken, the shared experience binding them momentarily against the darkness outside. A deep breath filled your lungs then. Of roasted meat, damp concrete, and a faint whiff of chlorine from the pool below. A moment of fragile, hard-won peace...one that you had also earned.
And so, you picked up a plate and went to serve your own portion as well.
A/N: I have decided to aim to make this chapter and the next few lean a bit more on the short side since we are almost done with this story arc, and this should help me update more quickly, so I split the content of this one into two chapters. The next one should be ready pretty soon since it's already partially written, but until then, please remember to review if you have anything to add, and until next time.
