Chapter 9
Who does Kate ask? The couple or the policewoman?
The Couple
There was no way that Kate was going to humiliate herself by asking the officer. Who knew if she was one of the members of the police **** who had a grudge against her?
Swallowing her pride, Kate slowly made her way out of the alley and tiptoed towards the couple on the bench. Once she got close, Kate lowered herself to the ground, getting in a crawling position as she slowly made her way towards the couple in an attempt to not be seen.
Once she was behind the bench, Kate looked up and saw the couple leaning in for a kiss. "Psst!" Kate whispered, trying to get their attention, "Psst! Excuse me."
The couple stopped halfway as they both gave confused expressions. The woman looked around the bench before she and the man looked behind the bench, their eyes going wide as they looked down at the little, naked woman.
"Hi." Kate began as she looked up with a sheepish grin, her face redder than a tomato. "I know how this looks, but I assure you that I can explain all of this if you just - "
"Oh my stars!" The woman gasped, a little too loud for Kate's comfort. The woman then jumped up from the bench and ran around to the other side before scooping the little superheroine up into her arms. "What in heaven's name are you doing out here, Little one?!"
"I was just about to -" Kate began to explain, only to stop as she realized what the woman said. "Little one? What are you talking about? I'm probably only a few years younger than the both of you!"
"Well," the man said as he got back up, standing next to the woman, "she sure is a talkative little tyke, isn't she?"
"Tyke?!" Kate shrieked indignantly, her face going red in a mixture of anger and humiliation. "Are you two even listening to me?! I'm trying to tell you that - "
As Kate began to explain her situation, she was completely unaware of the fact that she was speaking nothing but baby babble to these two. The woman merely smiled down at the little woman, gently rocking her in her arms, causing Kate to end her tirade.
"Oh, Johnny." The woman said, addressing the man as she donned an expression that was a mixture of anger and terror. "What cold, heartless, monster would leave a baby stranded in the middle of the city?"
"Are you idiots deaf and stupid?!" Kate yelled, looking up at this woman. "I'm not a baby!"
"It's just not right, Dani." John said in a low voice. "She just can't be alone out here!"
"Johnny, that's it!" Dani said as she held the little woman tightly against her rather large chest. "We'll take her in!"
"What?!" Kate shrieked as her eyes went wide in terror.
"I don't know, Danielle." John said a little uneasily. "I mean, it's not like we found her on our doorstep."
"Please, Johnny!" Dani begged. "We were just talking about having kids this morning, and it's not like we'd be any worse parents than the monster who abandoned this little cutie!"
"I am not a baby! I was not abandoned! And I do not need new parents!" Kate cried out, still unaware that she was only babbling gibberish. "I am an adult! Do you hear me?! An ad- "
"Just listen to that," Dani said as she gestured to the squirming little woman in her arms, "she's practically begging us to be her mommy and daddy!"
"I am not, you stupid, fat -" Kate rang off a string of expletives that only came out as, "Gabba goo-goo da ga ba!"
John looked between the squirming woman and his wife, the latter pouting as she gave big, puppy dog eyes with crocodile tears. He sighed. Whenever his wife gave him that look, he never won an argument.
"Okay." John finally said, giving his wife a smile as she squealed in joy. "She can stay. You take her back to the apartment and give her a bath while I go and buy some supplies. I'll see you later tonight."
Dani let out another happy squeal as she and her husband went their separate ways. Kate, on the other hand, could only let out a horrified whimper as Dani carried her towards her home... For a much unwanted bath by a stranger who thought she was a baby!
What was happening?! She was starting to think that she might have made a mistake...
--
Nearby, Mommy Dearest had seen and heard the entire conversation. She chuckled darkly as she walked down another alleyway. With Little Helper out of the way, this city was as good as hers...
