Chapter 9 by Wikia Wikia

Who is there?

The Arendelle Pantheon

Stoick, Hiccup, Gobber, Mirabel and a small entourage of other Asgardians all gathered at the harbor as a new ship sailed into view.

The smell of snow, church incense and pine-scented candles loomed in the air as a boat sailed into view. It was much larger and more ornate than any of the Viking longships in Asgard's harbor, the sides painted with gold floral patterns. Nokks -- horse-shaped water spirits -- pushed the boat from behind as invisible wind spirits from the North tugged at its sails. Nests full of salamanders slept peacefully in the various lanterns than illuminated the ships before the winter fog surrounding the ship dissipated completely as the boat docked.

A man dressed in green and brown formal wear, his red hairline receded with a prominent nose, walked down the plank and cleared his throat.

"Introducing, her divine majesty of Arendelle's Pantheon; the Snow Queen of Scandinavia; her Holiness and Goddess of Winter, Queen Elsa."

A goddess walked down the plank without making a sound. She was dressed in a long, flowing dress that looked as though it were sewn from snowflakes. Her hair was platinum blond, tied back in a braid that looped around her shoulder. Her skin was flawless and pale, her eyes the color of sapphire.

Mirabel couldn't help but feel inadequate in comparison. Standing before her was a true goddess.

"Queen Elsa," muttered Stoick. "It is an honor to have you with us."

"The honor is mine, Allfather," said Elsa with a hint of sincerity.

Compared to the Queen's grace, an extra pair of feet clomped down the walkway as though she had overslept and was running late.

"Introducing our Goddess of Spring," said the man, trying to get the introduction out of the way before the other person could make it down. "Princess Anna."

"Hey-Hi sorry. Shoes came loose and it was a whole thing. Hey everyone!"

This other goddess was just as pretty as the Queen, but she couldn't be more different. While Elsa could have ruled the Heavens, Anna was definitely the "earthly" type. Her dress was green and had patterns of sunflowers sewn into it, though it wasn't nearly as ornate as her sister's. Her eyes were the green of cucumbers and flowers that haven't bloomed yet. Her face and bare shoulders were covered in freckles, and her red hair was tied into a bun.

"Hiccup!"

Anna, already having forgotten her manners just as she had regained them, sped right up to the Norse Prince and wrapped her arms around him. She was shorter than him and had to wrap her arms around his midsection, but that didn't stop her from giving him a bear-hug so enthusiastic that it lifted him a few inches off the ground.

"It's been so long, how are you?"

"Uh-great," said Hiccup, Anna's grip much stronger than her waifishness would have you believe.

Elsa gave her sister an exasperated look that broke through her own composure, while Stoick just laughed at her enthusiasm. Mirabel wasn't so amused, seeing another goddess being so handsy with her secret boyfriend.

"Um, hi," said Mirabel, interrupting.

Anna's gaze snapped to Mirabel and she let go of Hiccup.

"Oh, hello, I don't think we've met. Or maybe we did. I want to say... Debbie?"

"Anna," said Hiccup, stumbling slightly as he regained his footing. "This is Mirabel. She's from another one of our allying pantheons."

Much like the Encanto, Arendelle was a divine realm that formed from cultural osmosis and had been gaining steady tractions for a few generations. From a mix of indigenous, Northuldran animism, Protestant Christianity and Norse Paganism, the Arendelle Pantheon was three generations old, having been founded by Elsa and Anna's parents Agnarr and Idunna (godly personifications of the Church of Norway and the Northuldran Ways respectively) after Agnarr's father King Runeard (a Lutherian Saint immortalized through legend) tried to conquer the spirits of the Northuldran people by the sword.

While their history was dark and ugly, Elsa, like her parents before her, strived to ensure that her religion was one of peace and prosperity, so she was perfectly willing to agree to Stoick's proposition for mutual cooperation. They were distant cousins after all, her worshippers having been descended from the Barbarians of Northern Europe.
