Chapter 38 by EyeontheWall

What's next?

The Aftermath of Harry's Detention.

Through the Great Hall a rumor quickly spreads, Draco Malfoy, Neville Longbottom, and Harry Potter had found a slain unicorn in the Forbidden Forest!

You look at Jennifer, who seems determined to keep her expression blank.

"This doesn't mean anything!" she hisses when you try to talk about it.

Ezra and Raj seem to take it with a grain of salt, as you overhear Ezra telling Raj "I can see Harry telling tall tales like that, I mean, he probably wouldn't know a unicorn if he saw one. Longbottom and Malfoy are from better families than that!"

"I know, you'd think that Malfoy especially would know better than to go around telling outlandish stories like that!" Raj laughed.

You frown to yourself. You sidle over to the Gryffindor table and try to get Ron's attention. The Red-haired chessmaster looks to you with a grin.

"Hullo Marvolo!" he quips. "What's on your mind?"

"I uhh," you begin. "I heard a rumor going around, did Harry really see someone attacking a unicorn last night?"

Ron looks around guiltily, "I don't know where you've heard such rubbish-"

"Ron please, this is important!" you say. Something in your voice catches Ron's attention.

"It's true," Ron admits. "Don't worry about it, I mean the Teachers are looking into it."

"That's what I am worried about." you mutter.

Ron meets your gaze and nods understandingly. "You've noticed Snape acting weird too, huh, mate?" You blink in surprise, but Ron doesn't seem to notice. "Harry and I have been watching him, and trying to keep his plan in check."

"Could it be Snape?" you wonder to yourself. The quiet potions master was always lurking around the Forbidden Corridor, but it didn't quite fit. Snape was proud, and probably arrogant. More than those, Snape was meticulous. He struck you as the person who would take the time to "do something right." The unicorn blood was too risky a gamble. Besides Snape wasn't that ill, he had been limping around, but it didn't seem to be the kind of an injury that would need unicorn's blood to fix.

Also in your vision you had attacked the unicorn with a feral savagery, which also didn't seem to fit the reserved, calculating potions master. Even if he was working with the enemy he would have found a solution to their problem with less of a risk. It didn't quite add up.

"Marvolo?" Ron asks, "You alright? -Hey don't worry about it, mate. Harry, Hermione, and I we're working on a plan!" he smiles as if to bolster your spirits. "Harry defeated You-Know-Who, so he can handle Snape!"

You smile wanly.

What is there to worry about?
