Chapter 3 by DamianFreeUseLover669 DamianFreeUseLover669

In this world...

The "Official" and Protected Languages of the United States

Just like in our reality, the United States in this reality has no official language. However, we do have a Standard language - American English. A Standard Language means that it is the default language of the nation and non-native speakers are highly encouraged to learn it if they want to successfully pursue the American Dream - but you don't have to worry about being harassed or discriminated against if you decide to speak your native language in public. Essentially, if you come to America, it's mandatory for American English to be your second language.

While American English is the Standard Language, the United States also has a list of Protected Languages - languages or dialects of languages that are prioritized for preserving and learning.

These languages are...

  • Louisiana French
  • Navajo
  • Pennsylvania Dutch (a variation of Palatine German)
  • Tangier Talk (named after Tangier - an island off the coast of Virginia whose residents still speak the kind of English that the early colonial settlers did)
  • Puerto Rican Spanish
  • Texas German
  • Tagalog
  • Hawaiian
  • Polish
  • Italian
  • Samoan
  • Yiddish
  • Dutch
  • Frisian
  • Cherokee
  • Apache (meaning that in this timeline, Plains Apache didn't go extinct in 2008)
  • Choctaw
  • Dakota
  • Lakota
  • Hopi
  • Irish Gaelic (meaning that the U.S. in this timeline has more native Irish speakers than Ireland does)
