Chapter 4
by bison
Does he turn over the heirloom?
Telling the truth?
"But I dont have it! Honestly!" protested Autolycus.
"Why am I not convinced." retorted Xena.
"I havent the foggiest idea."
At that moment Gabrielle chirped up, "Please, if youve got it hand it over."
"But I really dont. You try to make a decent reputation for yourself and this is what
happens. Every Tom, Dicarius or Hermione comes looking for you thinking youre the one who stole their trinket."
Gabrielle started, "How did you know her name was Hermione?"
"Did I say Hermione? I meant .. Herodytus!"
Xena sighed, "Okay, if you didnt steal it you certainly know something about it!"
Autolycus shrugged, "All I know is that the temple of Dionysus in the mountains near here holds some sort of fabulous treasure. I was just... passing by when I heard some low thief had appropriated it. So I thought Id try to help by returning said treasure to the owner. Thats when you walked into the bar."
"How .. noble of you." said Xena, relaxing her grip on her sword, "Though Im sure you returning the item was secondary in your mind!"
"And now if youll be excusing me, I have a boat to catch." he winked. And with that he tweaked Gabrielles ass playfully and leapt through the window into the darkness outside.
"So what now?" asked Gabrielle, rubbing her ass.
"Now we get some sleep and go find that treasure in the morning." replied Xena.
The next morning saw Xena and Gabrielle up at the crack of dawn. After accepting some small provisions from the Innkeeper they marched off in the direction of the temple that Hermione had described. The going soon got rough and slow as they ascended into the foot hills around the mountains. Pine trees replaced the deciduous oaks and elms that clothed the lower plains and soon they were walking through a sea of bracken and ferns while a carpet of pine needles softened their footfalls. Gabrielle was the first to notice a small plume of smoke rising in the distance.
"I wonder if thats the temple?" she said optimisticly.
"More likely trouble!" Xena corrected.
The two young women soon arrived at a small farmstead. Smoke curled up from the blackened shell of a barn while a man tried unsuccessfully to round up some sheep.
"What happened?" asked Gabrielle.
"A beast! A beast came from the mountin shrine and took my wife and daughter!"
"What did it look like?" Xena enquired.
"Huge! Huge, red, horns! It burnt my barn and took my family! Please help me."
Will they help?
