Tell Mrs. Hardy of the Misunderstanding

I looked up. “I think there’s been some misunderstanding.” Her face had a slight twitch, which I assumed was her way of showing surprise. “This isn’t the reason I’m here,” I said as I handed the papers back. Mrs. Hardy stared at the offered papers as if they had done something to offend her. “I’m just here to support my friend. Nothing else.”

She gave me a studying look. “Not many guys would turn this down,” she said taking the papers.

I **** a smile. “You heard Zoe. Not their type.”

“True.” She didn’t hesitate in confirming it. She sighed, looking regretful as she put the papers back on her desk. “Pity. I think you would have made a great team manager. You would have certainly caused less drama than the last few.”

“Drama?”

“You know how girls are. Always bickering about who goes next. Anyways, I need to get back to practice.” She hesitated as I backed out the door. “If you ever change your mind…”

I wouldn’t, but she didn’t need to know that. “I’ll let you know.”

Locking the door behind her, she headed to the gym. I followed her in as she started bellowing orders.

My eyes followed Kaylee as she hustled in with the others. Our eyes met and she flashed me a smile before focusing on whatever her coach was telling the team. Taking a seat on the bleachers, I spent the remaining time wondering whether this was all a big misunderstanding, or if she had planned for this to happen.
