Chapter 5 by Spooky-Tyrant Spooky-Tyrant

How do you proceed?

Take her under your wing

The desire to subdue and ruin her is there, it always was and always will be - It's in your blood. You know better than to give in to the impulse so easily though. Wherever the power within the ancient tome takes you, you do not intend your future rule to be one of a lonely throne. Even the mightiest of kings require a trusted court to surround them. Lana is far from a scholarly advisor and while the body hidden underneath her heavy robes is without a doubt enticing and fertile, she's no concubine either - Not yet, anyway. But any follower is a boon to your ambition. An apprentice she shall be.

"We have no reason to fear this power." You explain, the smile on your dark lips gentle, but laden with mischief, "Just imagine what we can do with this. All we need to keep in mind is to not let it consume us. We master the tome, not the other way around." She nods along as if being privy to some long forgotten wisdom. You were like her in your youth. Most of your kin are - Ambitious, reckless to a dangerous degree. It takes a stern but patient hand to temper such fire into a tool worth using.
One problem will be difficult to ignore. The academies follow a very strict hierarchy. Individual apprenticeships among mages not officially endorsed by imperial qualifications are frowned upon at best, violently prosecuted at worst. You both are keenly aware of this. Quite a few other students, advanced or not, had found themselves dragged out of the venerable building in chains for exactly what you're about to propose. Bond between arcanist and apprentice is sacred, not by divine law but in a sort of "honor among thieves" way. It's a common courtesy. A mage keeps no secrets from their student, only withholding information for a time until they are ready to wield it. In turn, the apprentice must be loyal, reliable and patient. Both benefit, as magic is always best performed in community, not solitude - Even though a few enterprising necromancers might claim otherwise.

What you suggest is monumentally stupid by any academic degree. But it will ensure safety and loyalty in a way that will be difficult to break apart with some temptation. Even the illegal bonds of such kind are frowned upon in all circles when broken. Of course it binds you too, keeps you more honest than you might want to be. But sacrifices need to be made - Perhaps you do have a soft spot for her. Whatever the case, you speak your mind:

"I know this magic. I have not wielded it before. Nothing like this, anyway. You will not let this go, neither will I. You're going to ruin yourself if you're not careful. And I might lose myself for the same reason."

"What do you propose?" She asks, clearly already thinking what you're about to say, blushing a little at the notion, but not daring to overstep by suggestin it herself. There is a certain, almost romantic, courtship to the whole ordeal. The master approaches the potential students, not the other way around.

"Apprenticeship." You say, taking that burden upon yourself with the suggestion alone. It feels oddly exhilarating, that commitment. "I teach you all I know, and all I can learn. In turn you aid me, and...keep me grounded when I lose sight of being cautious."
There is a hidden promise to it. Power, prestige, worth - Afterall such magic is not used for parlor tricks. You will not let it go to waste. You are not power hungry in the vein of your kin, but you would be a fool not to grasp at the proverbial throne presenting between those pages.
There is little room for further daydreaming. Lana basically jumps at you with a heartfelt hug - One she immediately breaks, knowing that she might be overdoing it. "Thank you..." She simply said meekly, trying and failing to put on a serious face, "I shall bind myself to your word and wisdom, Master Varian."

What will be your next course of action?
