After your college nursing trainees have had a chance at the buffet lunch spread on Brenda's pool deck, you call them together to ask about their experiences during their volunteer rotations so far. This time they're all still dressed and no one has been in the pool yet. You had told them that they should be careful since you didn't know when Tom Box would be back and you'd prefer that he not catch any of you doing something he would leer at and make crude jokes about.

Anna and Dot, the icy blonde and the cheerful freckled redhead, seem about the same. Perhaps they're a little more confident and relaxed. They hadn't known each other before joining Brenda's nursing volunteer training program, but they seem to be getting along fine as roommates and shiftmates.

Olivia and Margarita, a tightly braided, tall and dark young woman alongside a young woman with loose brunette waves, brown-eyed and golden-skinned, are at ease. You have to call them twice because they're having an intimate discussion, their heads bowed close together, whispering in each other's ears. Of course, they are lovers, so it's not a surprise.

Jennifer and Kelly, a tall brunette with Eurasian features, and her best friend, a petite blonde, have been gossiping. Jennifer's telling dirty jokes she's learned from the staff at Labor and Delivery, and Kelly is matching them with dirty jokes she's learned from expectant moms. Jennifer still strikes you as adept and intent, aimed at a Nurse Practitioner path, or perhaps an M.D., while her blonde friend seems less naïve than when their term had started.

"You can see me later if there's anything you want to share privately," you tell them, "I thought we'd all benefit from sharing together, particularly if you have any advice or questions that other students could benefit with. Let's start by hearing from everyone about the departments they've been working in."

Dot grins. "I learned how to read the signs to stop Anna from putting her foot in it," she says. "So we're getting on better."

Anna sighs rolls her eyes up and to the side, but doesn't argue. "I'm stocking the cabinets and the crash carts," she says. "Doing equipment checks. At least there I can make sure things are done right."

"And Anna helps me review during lunch and when we're back at home," Dot says. She gives a crooked smile. "So now I see what Anna was seeing, you know? Sterile field mistakes? Hurrying and forgetting things? But I'm not brave enough to call out a doctor."

"Dot is very good," Anna says. "She stays out of the way when things are moving fast. Blood does not fluster her. Crazy angry patients don't scare her. And people like talking to her." She nods in Dot's direction.

"Well, maybe," Dot says, "but I'll be happy when we rotate out. I was asking around to see what departments are good for trainees, you know, or at least knowing which ones we should stay away from."

"Occupational therapy!" Olivia says.

"Yeah, wow," Dot says. "I'm glad Ms. Bates found you a new place. I was worried you and Margarita would be out, and that would have been a real shame."

Anna shrugs, her face blank. They did it to themselves, you imagine she's thinking.

"So anyway," Dot says. "Everyone says Labor and Delivery is great."

"It is!" Kelly chimes in.

Dot laughs. "Yeah. I also heard that Dr. Cutler, she does sports medicine, and since there's not enough of that around here, also OB/GYN? She had a couple of trainees that just finished up, and people seem to like her."

Anna adds, "She came in when we had a sports injury in Emergency. I could tell she looked at us like a man does. Face, tits, and ass. She looked the same at the woman resident."

"Dr. DeLoria Cutler? Black? Kind of motherly looking? Shiny short curls?" you ask. Brenda had told you that when she was pregnant and she had too much sex drive for her husband to satisfy, She helped me. Found me lovers. Women.

"That's her," Anna says.

Jennifer pipes up, "Ms. Goodchild said there was a rumor she was a lesbian cougar. But I've seen her husband pick her up a couple of times, so eh?"

Dot looks at Jennifer, a little worried.

Anna says, "It would not bother me." She puts a hand on top of Dot's. "Don't worry. We can look over our choices together."
