Chapter 22 by robyna

Should you stream or do something else?

Stream with Jeremy

You need more streaming exposure and playing a god game sounds like fun.

Jeremy finds a game called Crest, which is a god simulator where you give your worshipers cryptic commands which they somehow manage to misinterpret into all sorts of trouble. It's a lot of fun and you manage to work some discussion of your own proposed stream into the conversation, promising you'll include links in the description.

When the two of you aren't bantering about the game, Jeremy quizzes you on hacking... and game exploits, as the two of you fantasize about how characters in the game you're playing, as well as the game that you're living if the sim theory is true, might be able to take control of their fates.

One of the viewers (admittedly there are only twelve but that's above average for Jeremy argues that hacking from inside the program is impossible... that programs are deterministic and so it's simply not worth discussing.

It's an interesting point but you spot several problems in the logic. First, it assumes that your exploiting the hack was not part of the deterministic program. Considering that any simulation as complex as the viewable universe would be written by an AI rather than a human coder, it seems presumptuous to assume we know their motivation. Second, it assumes that future civilizations are unable to introduce true randomness into computer programs. Considering how unpredictable even pseudo-randomness can be, this seems a stretch. And third, computer programs are attacked by viruses all the time. By analogy to human retroviruses, it seems entirely possible that the viruses could come from within the program... or that some sort of stack overflow exploit within the program could rewrite intended code for its own purposes.

You're not completely sure you're on the right track here but you certainly aren't convinced to give up on your ideas. At least a couple viewers indicate their interest and willingness to help spread the word of your stream once you get it going.

After a couple of hours of gaming, Jeremy reminds you he has to work tomorrow and the two of you shut down.

On to Saturday?
