Stay behind and assist the household

Chapter 6 by Northener Northener

As the hunting party assembled in the courtyard, the estate seemed to come alive.

Horses stamped impatiently against the cobblestones while grooms made their final adjustments to saddles and bridles. Footmen hurried between riders carrying gloves, riding crops and flasks, ensuring nothing had been forgotten before the day's sport began.

Sir Edward mounted his horse with practiced ease.

"You needn't accompany me today, {reader}," he said, adjusting his gloves. "Lord Ashcombe has more than enough men attending the hunt already."

"Very good, sir."

"I'd sooner have you make yourself useful here than spend the morning standing behind me in the woods."

"I will, sir."

With a respectful nod, you stepped back as the hunting party set off through the great gates of Kingsmere Hall.

The thunder of hooves gradually faded into the distance.

Silence settled over the courtyard.

The guests had gone.

The work had only just begun.

Servants immediately dispersed across the house, each returning to duties that had been temporarily interrupted by the excitement of the morning.

Breakfast tables needed clearing.

Bedrooms required freshening.

Drawing rooms had to be prepared for the ladies who had remained behind.

The household never truly rested.

You had barely stepped inside when a familiar voice called your name.

"Mr. Thomas."

Emily Carter approached carrying a neatly folded stack of linen.

"I didn't expect to see you still here."

"Sir Edward thought I could be of more use at the house."

A smile spread across her face.

"Then I'm very glad he did."

She glanced down the corridor where two maids struggled to carry an armful of firewood.

"We're rather short of hands this morning."

"I'd be happy to help."

"I thought you might."

For the next hour, you worked alongside the household staff.

You carried coal for the drawing room fires, fetched clean linen from the laundry, moved furniture while carpets were beaten, and helped prepare several guest rooms before their occupants returned later that afternoon.

It was honest work.

Unlike the polished formality required upstairs, there was something refreshingly straightforward about working beside people who cared only that the job was done well.

Emily proved to be exactly as diligent as you had expected.

She never complained.

Never slowed.

Whenever another servant needed assistance, she seemed to notice before anyone else.

"You're making this look easy," she remarked as the two of you paused outside one of the guest chambers.

"I've had plenty of practice."

"So have I."

She smiled.

"I suppose that's why we're getting through everything so quickly."

A nearby clock chimed the quarter hour.

Emily tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.

"I'll admit…" she said quietly, "it's nice having someone around who doesn't mind helping without being asked twice."

"I was taught that if something needs doing, it's usually quicker to simply do it."

"I wish more people thought that way."

For a brief moment, neither of you spoke.

The silence wasn't awkward.

Merely comfortable.

Emily broke it first.

"Come on."

She nodded towards the staircase.

"I think there's still plenty to keep us busy before everyone returns."

With a small smile, you followed her further into the house, quietly satisfied that your morning had been spent exactly as Sir Edward would have wished.
