Nurse Julie Paul sits on the couch in Frances Cook's office, one arm in a sling. She holds hands with Cara Volsky, the nursing volunteer with whom she's been carrying along a lesbian affair. Your supervisor, Ms. Cook, is behind her desk. You and Cara are dressed for hospital work. Ms. Cook is wearing glasses and nurse's whites, though she has no floor duties in her position.

"So, a written warning?" you say.

"Yes, Gloria," Ms. Cook says. She nods her head, her silvered blonde ponytail bobbing. "This was outside the hospital and outside the line of hospital duties. If Nurse Paul and Ms. Volsky can remain reasonably discreet, and we assure there is no supervisory relationship, there is no further administrative action needed."

"What about the volunteer program itself?" you ask Ms. Cook.

"What do you mean, Gloria?" Ms. Cook says. She pushes up her glasses.

"Would you tell me how you first met Cara?" you say.
