"Could we go back in your office?" you say. "I want to ask you something." You hope you got the tone of voice right.

She leads you back into the hospital administration office. Only the two of you are in the front room. Everyone else might be gone by now.

She strokes her hair and cocks her head to one side. "What was it, Nurse Bates?" she asks.

"Did you let me walk in on Ms. Palatino on purpose?" you ask.

"Yes," Clara says.

Your face flushes hot. "Why?" you hiss.

"Because, Nurse Bates, you're the worst closet lesbian case I've ever met," Clara says. "Go munch some rug."

Your arm stiffens as you resist slapping Clara's smug, smoothly made-up face.
