Spectacularly!

"How come you don't wear a military uniform? Are you some kind of special forces or something?" Claire asks.

"No, I'm not part of the military," you say.

"A civilian doesn't shoot the way you do," Claire says.

"I never said I was a civilian," you say.

"What the hell are you, then?" she asks.

"That's a story for another day," you say.

Then the first explosion goes off on the other side of town.

"Oh, man, that was loud!" Claire says.

The whole town is probably going to be awake now.

"Let's go, we need to hurry " you say.

"Alright, let's go!" Claire says excitedly.

You start running through the streets, keeping to the shadows as much as possible. Most of the town is without power, so there's plenty of them. You jump a concrete barricade and enter the inhabited section of the town. You hear gunfire in the distance, along with more explosions. You enter an alley and take cover by a dumpster as a squad of militiamen come running by. They don't notice you, thankfully. You follow them until they turn a corner, at which point you quickly disappear in the opposite direction.

"The EMS center is this way," Claire whispers into your ear. "Come on."

You follow her as she leads you through a maze of alleys, using the cover of darkness and her knowledge of the area. Eventually, you emerge across from the station. But there are four men nearby with rifles and flashlights. They're facing the street, but if you try to sneak past them now, they'll notice.

"You!" one of them says, shining his flashlight in your face. "What are you doing out of your house at this time of night?"

"I..." you stutter, hiding your M16 and trying to sound like a scared civilian. "I heard an explosion!"

"Those deserters are attacking! This is no time to be playing around!" the man says. "You, come with us."

You glance at Claire, who nods slightly. Then another explosion and more gunfire erupts. The men all turn.

"What was that?" one of them says. "Shit, they're getting closer!"

You bring your M16 to bear and fire from the hip, taking out the nearest two. Claire and her deputies take out the other two.

"Okay, we need to move," she says. "Everyone grab a truck!"

You nod and follow her as she darts to the first transport truck. She opens the driver's door and hops in. As soon as you hear the engine roar to life, you slam the door and hop in the next one. The other men follow suit and soon the four of you are on the road and driving away. Claire takes the lead and steers her truck down an unblocked street. Militiamen start firing their rifles out the windows of a building, but all four trucks get away. As you drive, you pick up the radio and switch it on.

"Betty, we're clear," you call into it.

"Good! Because we're all out of grenades and Father Nao has a shit ton of followers and they're all crazy as hell," Betty replies.

"You better not get yourself shot!" you warn.

"Yeah, yeah. I'll see you back at camp," she says.

The sound of gunfire in the background isn't exactly comforting.

The time passes uneventfully and you pull the truck into the steel mill's shipping yard.

"Alright! Get everybody into the trucks! We have minutes at most," you yell. "Let's go!"

People pile into the trucks and sit amongst the supply crates as they begin speeding away, one at a time.

But it is too late. From the other direction, you can hear the sound of engines roaring. Betty's Humvee is coming and Father Nao's militia are close behind!
