Chapter 14
by Daylan
So Who's Your First Capture Attempt?
Spearow!
"Charmy!" you shout as you point dramatically, "Get the Spearow!"
Both Flying-Types turn their heads as they hear your shout and are momentarily flat-footed (figuratively speaking for two Pokemon in mid-air) as Charmy charges forward and leaps up, Tackling head first into the Spearow's body before it can recover. As you expected, the Pidgy decides that whatever territory fight it and the Spearow were engaged in isn't worth fighting off a second interloper and takes to the higher skies in retreat.
The Spearow, meanwhile, crumples, its previous injuries being exacerbated by your Eevee's attack. To its credit, the Flying-Type staggers back to its feet, glaring daggers at Charmy and looking like he still wants to fight, even though both its legs and wings are quivering from how taxed its body is. This both makes you feel worse about the sneak attack and yet also more certain that you want this Pokemon as part of your team.
"Use Sand Attack, Charmy," you order as you unclip one of your few spare Pokeballs from your belt.
Charmy does as asked, smashing its paws into the earth and scooping enough up to throw into the Spearow's eyes. The Spearow squawks in surprise and shakes its head, trying to clear its vision as you throw the Pokeball at it and when it collides with the Spearow's head, the Pokemon turns into a flow of light that is sucked into the ball.
The ball hits the ground and shakes once.
It shakes twice.
It shakes a third time.
Then there is a soft clicking noise and the ball lies still, indicating the capture has been completed.
"Whoo-hoo," you cry in excitement, "We caught a Spearow!"
You scoop up the Pokeball and give Charmy a hug and congratulatory head pats. It may have not been the most honorable of tactics but this still counts as your first wild Pokemon capture!
Now, of course, comes the question of what to do next.
You only have two spare Pokeballs left right now and it's probably for the best that you get to Veridian City as quickly as possible for the Spearow's sake. Though what you've read of beginning Trainer advice recommends having a team of at least three or four Pokemon as quickly as possible.
So then, should you just rush as fast as possible to the city and capture whatever you first run across or still try to keep a more critical eye out for what you want to take with you as you go?
How Picky Are You?
