Chapter 57 by heynow
Snoop now or Snoop later?
Snoop now
"Let's see if we can do it now. I'm getting a weird vibe from this place and I'd like to get out of here as soon as possible instead of hanging around."
"Fair enough. Let's go then."
The two of you exit the room and make your way down the hall. You have to pass a couple security guards along the way, but under the guise of escorting your companion, you are able to walk right on past with a friendly nod without arousing suspicions. Moen's office is at the end of a hallway with a guard stationed outside though. There's going to be no sneaking past that. You stop before turning that final corner, trying to think of how you will get into the office without being noticed.
"Here, give me a boost," Barbara says as she puts her hands on your shoulders. You oblige and clasp your hands together, allowing her to climb up you. She dislodges one of the ceiling tiles and ascends into the ceiling. "Keep a lookout for me," she whispers down to you. "Back in a few." She disappears from view and replaces the ceiling tile. Meanwhile, you come around the corner slowly, ready to engage the guard if necessary. The guard is stationed outside the door as expected. The door is closed, but the blinds are open on the window and you see a figure dart across. Luckily, security is aimed to prevent entry through the door, so the guard doesn't see anything. You hear the faint click-clack of high heels approaching on the floor and realize that you've heard that cadence before. Crap, that's Moen probably on her way back to her office. Gotta stall her.
"Hey, do you know if Miss Moen is in?" you ask the guard, pretending that you didn't just hear her walking toward you. He just lifts a finger and points over your shoulder. You turn and there she is, just as you thought, walking down the hallway. "Thanks, man." You give a wave and shout, "Miss Moen!" a little too loudly for the hallway, but hopefully loudly enough that Barbara was able to hear something from inside the office.
"What is it, Mister Dominguez?" she asks.
"This is terribly embarrassing, but... well... I wasn't expecting to be here all day. After all I was just coming in for an interview. I'm mighty grateful for the job, but you see I was planning on being home by now and I didn't bring any cash with me for lunch. I was wondering if I could get a small advance, even just for the tiny bit I've been on the clock so far, so that I can grab a bite to eat."
"That's not how we do things here, Mister Dominguez," she responds flatly, clearly annoyed. "You'll just have to suck it up and go hungry today. Or maybe one of your new co-workers can help you out." She starts to step around you, but you stay in front of her.
"One other thing, sorry."
She sighs. "Yes?"
"Do you have any aspirin? I have a splitting headache." You make a show of rubbing your temple for emphasis.
"There's a supply in the employee break room. Now, I really must be going. Good day, Mister Dominguez." She shrugs past you. _I wonder if she'd be nicer if I had gotten her off this morning. Oh well. Hopefully that bought enough time. _You go back down the hall and return to the spot where you boosted Barbara up, but there is nobody around.
"Come on, let's go!" a voice startles you from behind. You whirl around and there she is.
"How did you-? You know what, nevermind." The two of you walk down the hall toward her next station. "Find anything?"
"I uploaded the data from her hard drive to a remote server. I didn't have much time to look at it, but she has the financials of some of the people who were robbed, so it's got to be her. I covered our tracks, so we should be fine. Keep your eyes open and we'll meet back up at the end of the day." You drop her off for her 'facial rejuvenation' therapy before heading back to pick up your next massage client.
You spend the afternoon running through the rest of your client list. There's a wide variety; some young, some old, some outgoing, some prudish. Other than the occasional reappearance of the static sound, you don't notice anything else worthwhile. Finally, you clear the end of the list and you check out with Maurice.
"Miss Moen wanted to see you before you leave," he says. You change back into your regular clothes and head to Moen's office. Knocking on the door, she waves you in. Suspiciously, the security guard follows you in and closes the door behind you.
"Mister Dominguez, just the man I wanted to see. Would you care to explain why you aided someone in breaking into my office?" Crap.
How do you respond?
