Chapter 6 by lupine lupine

an introduction

Slumbering KAkuna

I started to turn away from Turq (that was the boys name) I wanted to find a seat before her lecture began. But out of the corner of my eye I caught the look on Turq’s face, a look that could make your heart sink.
He was holding up his own poke-gadget watch, looking at his updated credit account. "So you only came back to return my credits? You won't really be attending school here after today, will you?" he inquired.
I tilted my head sizing up this lad who had addressed me in such a familiar yet disappointed tone. Realizing that a re-introduction was required, I cleared my throat and said: "Turq, I am not leaving school this time, not until I am a trainer." I extended my hand to him as my guarantee
He winced a bit but accepted my hand.
I laughed good-naturedly. "Woah, you've got a strong grip! You are going to be a tough trainer very soon, I can tell."
But Turq didn’t respond. Instead he looked around at the girls and kids who were gathering around his squirtle, cooing and aawing. Apparently Turq had made a worthy enough trainer to already have one of the three regional pokemon awarded only once a year to the three most promising trainers. I nodded to him approvingly and released his hand. "I see that is your turtle.... I mean squirtle? You must be quite the whiz."
"Well, I don't know about that..." Turq said quickly, "My brother was the one who won all the prizes, before he quit being a trainer, just like you quit the school." He said that last bit with a very sharp reproach. The original Red would have been insulted and immediately defensive. I was not the original Red.
“I was wrong to leave, being a trainer is the only path for me. I know that now, and I hope that, with enough time I can prove it to you. Besides, anyone who can train a squirtle shouldn't be modest. You must be really smart and strong.” It was true, the amount of swimming alone was too much for many trainers. Not to mention rising with the sun, acting as the Squirtle's partner in battle after battle, with noting to encourage you at the end of the day but some trail-mix and a chilly tent.
Turq only blinked in surprise at Red's obvious sense of confidence and calm. We all found our seats. Thoughts were racing through my head, Turq's brother had given him the squirtle, but that was leaving out quite a few steps. Turq had probably caught a weak bug pokemon and traded it to his brother in exchange for the squirtle. His brother probably immediately turned around and released the bug back into the wild. That was the way of things on this world, but it was so obvious to the people here they never bothered to discuss it. But, Professor Juniper was speaking...

Without hesitation she began, "Before the challenge I wanted to talk to you junior trainers about the calendar." Then she flashed that gorgeous smile. “You all have color names, that is your generation. I have a tree name, that is my generation. I find this tradition quite charming and it is one of the benefits of having such an organized society. But very soon now it will be time for a new category of names for newborn babies. We don’t talk much about our calendar but this will be happening soon. Red is back with us today. Welcome back, kiddo. As Red is the oldest he will be the first of you to father children, what do you think, Red? What will be the nomenclature for the next batch of little ones?” She asked as she ran her fingers through her remarkably thick blonde hair. Although the auditorium was quite cool my skin began to radiate heat.
“Well, I'm not sure what the category might be, but I will name my children after the planets.” I responded, I was just being honest. I had given this considerable thought.
“Is that so?” Asked blonde, curvaceous Professor Juniper with a raised eyebrow, “How remarkable, I have made that same determination.”
“Whats a 'planet'?” called out one of the children.
“It is a world, a celestial body... but lets not wait anymore – lets do this challenge!” said Juniper, and although she was an enthusiastic and motivated teacher I suspected that she was changing the subject too, which she frequently did under such circumstances to protect her students.
A light shot down from the ceiling and revealed what looked like a very phallic sandstone carving in the center of the stage. It was completely still, I began to suspect it really was a statue and not a pokemon at all.
“Who can tell me what this is?” Asked the feminine teacher with a sly smile. I raised my hand, but she only looked at me curiously. On this world they stood up and called out answers. I put my hand down.
“That is the bug-type pokemon, kakuna.” I said confidently and so that everyone could hear me but not too loud.
“My, my, young Master Red you continue to surprise and impress me. Yes this is a Kakuna, but who knows what the challenge is?” She asked looking over the dozen-something scattered children. I did not even know what a challenge was, no one else offered an answer either.
“The challenge is to awaken this hibernating bug with the voice of command.” She explained in deep dramatics.
Some of the kids ohhhhhh'd. All trainers had to command. As the trainer became more confident and gained real experiences and reputation his commands became more and more irresistible even to the strongest and oldest pokemon.
I began to wonder... just how old was this beast? It looked like a damn fossil, plus if it was alive it was in some sort of bio-status. Had it gained power and stubbornness as it slept the years away? Surely some equipment would be required other than just the voice of a trainer. This was a steep challenge, indeed, I was become more an more intrigued by this school and by this long-legged professor.
All the kids had their chance, and I quietly rooted for every one of them, giving them a nod or a thumbs-up when they caught my eye. When I was called upon I asked to be moved to last, this impressed Juniper as it made me look generous. I tried several verbal commands on the Kakuna such as “Rest!” and “Sleep!” as these moves are for a very limited time. Additionally I thought I might be able to sneak in a sleep command to a bug in a sleep state. I waited a few minutes but it did not wake up.
Class was over but Juniper called for me to stay after. She said she was very impressed with me and that I seemed like a different person. I wanted her bad but I planned on returning the following day and I planed on impressing the socks off of her.
