Chapter 5 by Jeriah

Do they reach the marsh at all?

Sighting a mountain

After nearly two hours walking and hacking their way through the steamy jungle, Logan could finally make out some kind of landmark rise above the treetops. Some great mountain it seemed, and after a few seconds consideration he changed his course towards it.

Rocks would provide better ground to walk on, and maybe provide them some cover if they could find a natural cave or other hollow. He didn't know yet if it ever rained on this planet, but from all the jungles he'd seen so far it certainly looked like it, and he didn't want to get caught in the middle of some tropical flood.

"Do you even know where you're going?" Sarah whined tiredly as she trudged on behind him, noticing that they'd changed their course but still not seeing the mountain ahead of them as it was covered by the lush vegetation again. "Do you think there's life here? An imperial outpost maybe?"

Logan just scowled at the last question. Imperials were certainly the last thing he'd be wanting right now, even if it meant he'd have to spend the rest of his days on this god forsaken planet. The first question wasn't much worth answering to either, since she'd find out soon enough anyway. Admittedly, he wasn't the more talkative type of man...

The next of her querries was something he'd thought about himself though, and made him stop and scan the area again for maybe the fiftieth time since they arrived. With a lush and living jungle like this he found it strangely disturbing that he hadn't seen a single sign of life throughout their entire trip.

One would've expected some kind of birds or lizzards, or at least the constant buzz of insects. Not that he was missing their company though, since they'd probably been poisonous or flesh eaters anyway, but he still found the lack of them strangely unnerving...

Meanwhile, the creature was dismayed as it watched from the treetops. All of a sudden it's prey had changed their route and was no longer heading straight to the gasseous marshland, instead walking around the side of it and towards the barren cliffs. Up there it'd no longer be able to hide or travel in it's natural enviroment, up high in the lush vegetation, but instead be **** to shuffle over open ground.

And since they'd most likely reach the mountain before nightfall, it'd either have to try and sneak up on them when they stopped up there to rest, or take it's chances and attack them before they could reach the edge of the jungles. No other options seemed viable for now, unless they changed their course once again of course...

So what will it be?
