Chapter 5
by tantrikenetic
How do you decide to throw the stone?
Sidearm, from the Shoulder
You take a deep breath and exhale slowly, steadying yourself. You shift the stone around in your hand until your finger rests comfortably to one side. Then you pull your arm back before whipping it forward with a grand whipping of your whole arm. The stone sails through the air a good distance before hitting the water and starting to skip across the surface.
Skip. Skip. Skip. Skip. Skip.
Plunk.
You heart drops as you see the stone disappear into the blue after only five measly skips. You knew the minute it left your hand something was wrong. It had been too long since you had to defend your title and you were unready to replicate your earlier success. "Wha-" You start before getting interrupted with a loud hoot followed by a sudden dramatic increase of weight on your back, causing air to rush out of your lungs.
"Oh snap!" Melody yells out happily from her piggyback position, her arms wrapped around your neck and her legs around your waist. "You just got rekt, dude!"
"Okay, okay. Get off me." You say, trying to shake her off. She hops down to the ground again and gives your throwing arm a playful punch.
"Told ya it was all luck, Jack." She gloated, a grin plastered to her face. "So much for being the champ, huh? We are back on even ground. And what's this?" She pulls out a rock from her pocket. It wasn't as smooth and flat as yours, but was still a decent skipping stone. She gives you a mock expression of shock.
"Do I want to know where you pulled that out of?" You ask dryly, trying to ignore how badly she played you.
"I might have found this rock earlier on our walk while tying my shoes. Thought I might hold onto it for just such an occasion." She steps up to the water's edge. "Now let me show you how it's done." She brings her arm back and whips her hand forward, sending the rock flying out onto the water.
Skip. Skip. Skip. Skip. Plunk.
"Four skips!" she exclaims excitedly. "Let's see you beat that!"
"I already did. I got five, remember?"
"No, that was to defend your title. Then we reset back to a high score of zero for both of us. That skip doesn't count." She turns to face you. "Unless you just want to admit defeat."
"Ugh! Fine." You groan and look to the ground. "Let me find a stone." You search for five minutes, but to no avail. There were no more good skipping stones. Melody taps her foot impatiently.
"Are you gonna be down there all day?" She asks. "Time's up. Throw a rock or give it up."
"Yeah, yeah." You grumble, grabbing the best looking one you could find. It is not nearly as nice as the first one. You try to give it a good throw, but as expected, the results are less than spectacular.
Skip. Skip. Plunk.
"I win!" Melody cries out happily. "Fuckin' finally!" She begins to dance around, shaking her hips around. You have to admit that she is especially cute when she is this overjoyed, which makes it a bit hard to stay mad at her. Her bouncing breasts and swaying ass don't exactly hurt either.
"That was a cheap ploy, Melody. You know that, right?" You interject, trying to take the wind out of her sails.
"Doesn't matter." She says, still dancing around. "Still won." She comes to a stop and looks directly at you. "Well? Don't you have something to say?"
You let out a deep sigh. You knew this was coming. "You are the stone skipping champion, Melody, and I am unworthy to bask in your presence."
"Yeah, baby. Stroke my ego just like that." She taunts you, enjoying your misery. She makes a jerk-off motion with her hand again. "Stroke it looong and hard. I have a hot load of self-esteem I can't wait to bust all over your-" She suddenly stops and her face goes bright red. You see her looking beyond you and you turn around to see what she is staring at. An older couple with two young kids and a dog came around the curve and are now well within earshot. The look on the parents' faces were a mixture of confusion, disgust, and anger as they try to cover their kids' ears.
"Way to go, Melody." You say, getting some amusement out of her shame. "I can't take you anywhere."
"Um...race you back to camp!" She exclaims and books it back the way you came from. You sigh and chase her back along the path. You are able to quickly get a good amount of distance from the family, but Melody doesn't stop until she is back at your tent.
So much for the hike. What do you do now?
