Chapter 43
by Vain
Well, what does she say...?
She stays for a while at least
"Yeah, sure!" The young reporter surprised him, as she smiled in reply to his offer, and stepped inside to follow him towards the kitchen. Apparently she wouldn't shy down from just about anything, though that was something he guessed she'd learned from work, unless it was her inquisitive nature that made her so well suited for it in the first place.
"Nice colors." She said as she walked through the door behind him, while glancing around her at the sparse furniture in Jack's kitchen. There was really nothing special about it, but it made him realize how long it was since he stopped to bother himself with their house's interior, and left all such decisions to his wife and daughters instead. "It's a lot more tidy than I'd thought of you."
"It's only been a week and a few days." Jack heard himself grumble, as it was all too clear what she was hinting at, and he knew full well that nothing had really changed in the rooms since Shirley had left him. It wasn't like he'd been lazying around every day, but he certainly had a lot of other things to think about, and he didn't expect that either of his daughters would start to make drastic changes right away. But then again they'd actually helped out with the pool and some cleaning, which was far more than he'd given them credit for at the start of last week.
"I'm fine with just a glass of water, actually!" Samantha flashed him another smile, when he tried to ask her what kind of tea she'd like, and seemed to think for a second before she settled down on one of the chairs around the kitchen table. Not that it bothered him much that she managed to take the seat he usually used himself, but it was a little disturbing to think that she might have done it on purpose, which reminded him that she probably watched eating his breakfast several times before.
He quickly decided to not let it get to him though, since he didn't feel like starting their conversation with some kind of quarrel, and he settled for a glass of cold water as well, as he didn't want to start boiling it for himself alone. There was a lot of other questions on his mind though, but he just didn't know where to start, and the room went silent while they both leaned back and briefly studied each other over the top of their glasses.
"How's it going then?" Samantha was the first one to speak up again, though she did so with an annoyingly curious little smile on her lips, and Jack got the feeling that she would be the one asking most of the questions, whether he liked it or not. Especially when she hinted something about the rest of his family. "Are you getting along with your daughters yet...?"
What's he supposed to say to something like that...?

Girls of Jack
One man's world has been turned upside down, but he may find hope in the most unexpected places.
A story which I hope to work on when I have the time for it. For now it's closed for others, but I'll gladly accept ideas and suggestions for how to improve or continue the story! I've now started adding conditions, which is how I planned it from the start. So far it's recommended to read without activating the play function, but please try it out if you want, and let me know if you find something odd about the scoring.
