Chapter 44 by telaviv telaviv telaviv telaviv

Does that change her attitude?

She needs proof first.

Mrs Hathawer laughs incredulously. "Young man, I was there when my husband bought this house. I don't know where you get off but you do not own it. The camaro probably isn't yours either, you just tricked my daughter somehow."

"See for yourself." You pull up a photo of the wall you wrote on and turn the phone so the trophy wife can see it.

She almost rips it out of your grasp to inspect the photo. You wait patiently until she hands it back with a sheepish expression. "I don't know what to say, Mr Ferro. I swear I didn't know about this. It seems there's a lot Greg hasn't been honest about lately."

That sounds like something to dig into, but you hold off for now. "Is your husband here?"

She shakes her head. "He's on a business trip and won't be back until friday."

"Good, I wouldn't put it past him to do something stupid if I confronted him here. I think it's best to just change the locks and let him know without letting him in."

"I can give you the number of a good lawyer if you need one," Mrs Hathawer offers. Why is she helping you? "Will you give us some time to find somewhere to stay and have our things packed?" Oh, that's why.

"I intend to move in today," you say and enjoy the way her perfect face falls before continuing. "But I already told June I won't see you suffer for his crimes. You can stay for as long as you want."

"What do you mean we can stay? Are you moving in or not?"

June can tell her mother is struggling to understand. "He means we still live here, mom. He's moving in without kicking us out. Well he's kicking Greg out, but if you ask me that's good for both of us."

Her mother nods weakly. "If this house and his favorite car were never really his I wonder what else he's been dishonest about. You know I married him to give you a better life, but I don't want you looking up to a conman or a thief."

June laughs. "You do not have to worry about me looking up to him. Now, I said something about being nicer to my friend...“

She shakes herself out of her thoughts. "Right. Mr Ferro, if you truly intend to let me and my daughter stay here I'm very grateful. We'll try not to be a nuisance. Do you know where everything is or would you like a tour?"

Tours are boring and the layout can't be so complicated that you'd get lost, you think to yourself. "That's alright. For now just tell me where the master bedroom is, because that's where I'm sleeping tonight."

"Of course. It's upstairs, second door on the right. The first door is the master bathroom. I'll just go up and move my things into a guest bedroom. Unless we need to discuss anything else...?"

When you tell June's mom you can talk more later she excuses herself and leaves the room. You're tempted to say she can leave her things where they are and that she'll sleep in the same bed as you, but you want to get your "girlfriend" and mother settled before you make up any more rules. Speaking of, you should probably give Elsie a call so she knows you're moving house.

You pull out your phone to do exactly that, but before you can start dialing a video message from Kelly catches your eye.

What's next?
