Did Eliza get there in time?

She did but she wasn't happy

Chapter 146 by robyna

"I'm not a criminal lawyer," Eliza told Rick when she arrived, just seconds before the McKinney cops were set to take him by force.

"Lucky for me," he fired back, "because I'm not a criminal."

"Let me talk to the police."

She went over, got in their faces and talked lawyer stuff for a couple of minutes then returned to him.

"They are investigating the death of Mrs. Olivia Hughes. You will not answer any questions without me present. You will only answer questions when I give you permission to do so. You will remain silent when I suggest you do so or when I don't explicitly give you permission to answer. Do you agree?"

He nodded. Why bring a lawyer if you're not going to listen to her?

"In return for this, you are going to owe me forever. I can't believe I'm doing this. I went into corporate law for a reason."

"There's definitely some corporate law stuff going on here," Rick said. "I--"

"Shut the fuck up, Rick. Now I told the nice officers that I will deliver you to McKinney police headquarters for your interview and that they could head back but somehow they don't believe me and so they're going to provide us a friendly escort. So, let's go."

He got in Eliza's car and let her drive.

He'd been driven a lot by women over the past couple of days and Eliza was definitely the safest. She stayed within the speed limit, used her turn indicator about a minute before actually changing lanes and kept both hands on the steering wheel at the classic 10 and 2 position.

She also giggled. "They've got to be going nuts driving this slowly on North Central. And Rick, keep your hands to yourself. I've got to look imposing when I get there and looking like some bitch who's just been mauled in her car isn't the image I'm going for. Now, what's really going on?"

He told her his theory.

"That is completely paranoid. You really think this bio-DNA company is going around killing people for looking too closely at them? Why? I mean, from what you've told me they have a perfectly legitimate business that they make billions from. What, five million for a full dose?"

"Plus a hundred thousand a month in maintenance fees for the app."

"So, why would they do anything illegal that could cost them that bonanza?"

He put his hand on her arm. "I don't know, Eliza. Maybe it's just the sexual harassment thing. There sure is a lot of it there and they could get sued--

"First, this is Texas. Nobody gets any real money for that kind of case. And second, so they pay each woman a couple of million dollars. It's peanuts to them. Killing though could put them in jail."

"They're arrogant assholes who think they can get away with anything?"

She shook her head. "You're missing something here and until you figure out what it is, we have nothing."

"Except if I try to figure out what it is, I may end up dead."

"I'd say you're going to end up dead anyway if you don't do something fast. You should have been in the car that blew up and you should have been in the gym that burned down. You're a dead man walking, Rick. Your luck just can't last."

That might be true but it wasn't the kind of happy thought he wanted from his lawyer or from one of his lovers.
