"Well, John, I don't want to spoil the surprise," she said, winking at me.

I was disappointed. I wanted to know what the reason was, but clearly she wasn't going to tell me, at least not right now.

"Mrs. Foreman, if it's okay with you, I'm going to take a walk on the beach. I'll be back in a half hour or so."
