She breaks free from his hypnosis

She couldn't move. She could still blink, but her arms and legs refused to do as they were told. The vampire's eyes pulsed as they looked into hers, leering at her as his hypnotic spell held her fast. Venus could see him slowly open his mouth, baring a pair of fangs and preparing to feed on her.

As he lowered his lips towards her neck, Venus closed her eyes. She stilled her pounding heart and reached out to her memories. Months and years of training took over, and the words poured out from her mouth, dashing away the fog and shackles that had bound her.

I am a shadow

Without feeling, remorse, or judgement

Fear kills the mind

Anger destroys the eye

Within, nothing reigns king

Without, everyone must kneel

That was the Shadow Hunters' Creed. That the Hunters never lost control and that no one stood above the shadows, not even kings. The words resounded in her heart and brought back hope against the evils of the world. It was also a mental strengthening technique, shoring up her innate defenses against psychic attacks and similar assaults.

Her eyes re-opened, and once again Venus was her own.

Not wasting a single moment, Venus shoved the vampire back and reached down to her belt. Flipping open the pocket, she pulled out the vial of Alchemist's Fire she had bought earlier and flung it at the vampire with all her strength.

The vial shattered against his face and, as it did, the clear liquid held in the glass spontaneously erupted into orange flames, covering the vampire. He screamed and flailed wildly, stumbling around the room like an effigy. The fiery tongues licked upward to the ceiling as it consumed the undead creature's flesh and the heat was so strong that Venus had to stand back a few feet and shield her eyes.

As the last of the fires burned away, the charred body of the vampire collapsed to the floor.
