Seeing but unseen

Luigi and his group made their way through the forest, sticking close enough to Toad Town that they could see some of what was going on, but unable to do anything just yet. They saw Koopa and Goomba continuing to do evil acts throughout the town. A group of Goomba had taken over a house after forcing the occupants out and had made it their own. The store they had seen earlier had clearly been vandalized and looted, putting items that Luigi needed in the hands of the Koopa. Getting those supplies was a big part of Luigi's plans and now that seemed hopeless. But even worse than that was what Luigi saw next. Three Koopa pulling a female toad into a back alley. Their jeers at the young woman made it clear what they intended to do. Luigi wanted to save her. Mario WOULD have saved her. But Luigi's biggest fear made him unable to move. He wasn't Mario. He couldn't do the things Mario had done on a daily basis. Rushing into town and being everyone's hero came so easily to his older brother, but not to Luigi.

With a heavy heart, Luigi turned away from the seen and continued through the forest. Goombario started to say something, but Kooper put a hand on the Goomba and shook his head. Getting caught trying to stop this injustice would only allow more to happen. They had to find a way into town and find supplies. Maybe then they could stop things like this from happening. Five minutes later, they found themselves at the edge of the forest near the docks. The pipe leading into the sewers was where Goombario had said it would be.

"This will help us infiltrate the town and it opens into several of the basements. We'll be able to get around without being seen for the most part."

"Good job Goombario," Luigi said as he began leading the way into the pipe.

It was dark in the sewers. There were a few lights placed throughout the underground, but many were broken. Goombario tried to lead them through as best as he could even without a lot of light. Luigi had a bad feeling about these old tunnels. Mario had said that some bloopers lived down here and were led by a giant one. Mario had cleared out most of them and the giant, but what if Bowser had recruited the survivors? Luigi was lost in thought when he heard someone in the darkness trying to get their attention.

"Psssst! Over here!"
