I watched the little brown haired girl standing behind Sarah. It is amazing how one person could immediately knock all the air out of your lungs. I stood in the bedroom, looking back and forth between Sarah and the little girl. I lost all abilities to form coherent words. I was shocked.How could Sarah have a kid?
"Her name is Kenzie." Sarah said softly. Sarah looks like she was going to burst into tears. She was scared of how I am going to react.
I felt a mixture emotions running through me. Then, I surprised Sarah by walking up to Kenzie and held my hand out. “Hey Kenzie, nice to meet you.” I said with a smile on my face. Kenzie seemed scared by my presence but looked at Sarah. Sarah was unable to meet my gaze but she did tell Kenzie that it was okay to talk to me. Kenzie shook my hand with her small hand and then surprised me by hugging me. It felt nice to have a kid hug you so I hugged her back.
“Are you my daddy?” she asked. I peeked at Sarah who was looking the other way with tears coming down her face and replied, “Um...you can call me that if you want.” Kenzie seemed satisfied at my response and said, “Hi daddy!” I quietly observed Sarah as I played with Kenzie a little. She seem so distraught. Eventually, I left Kenzie to play by herself and walked over to Sarah.
"Hey Sarah. Let's talk outside for a moment." I told Sarah. She nodded and I grabbed her arm and gently pulled her out of the room. I felt bad and sympathetic towards Sarah about this whole situation.
