My name is Sara Williams. I’m one of the outsiders in high school. I’m not a nerd, I’m not weird, I’m not popular, I’m not a rebel…I’m just shy and quiet. I have a few friends, I’m cute (at least I’m blonde and petite so that helps), I’m in the top 10% of my senior class. I’m a good kid, just not at the top of any popularity contests.

Monday mornings were always slow starters. I usually get as at school early because I had an off period first period. Today I was just chilling in the library before my 2nd period class. While scrolling through tiktok I got a notification that my phone had automatically connected to a new network, something called “Mind Phone Alpha”. I was worried somebody was trying to hack me or follow me or kidnap me or something, so i went to disconnect immediately. Before I turned it off, I noticed the connection quality was amazing, especially compared to the shitty wifi we have in school (it’s super monitored so most people don’t use it) and the cell phone reception in the school grounds (it’s like they didn’t want us on our phones or something). Tempted by the connection quality, I decided to be careful but stay on the network. I could disconnect whenever I wanted, especially while driving home or anything.

I usually don’t get good enough reception to watch tiktok while at school, but this new network let me scroll through videos as much as I wanted! After 20 minutes of scrolling, I decided to check in with Rachel (my best friend). She should be getting to school soon, so I sent her a text.

S: where are you?

R: driving to school, whats up?

S: oh, nothing, just waiting for you in the library

R: ok, I’ll head that way

S: ok, can you grab me a coffee on your way?

R: i wasn’t planning on stopping

S: still, you could get us both coffee

R: why?

S: because we are best friends and like doing nice things for each other

R: ok

S: thanks! See you soon!

R: yup!

I scrolled a bit longer, then headed to calculus when the first bell rang. Rachel showed up before the late bell with two cups of coffee!

“Hey Sara! I thought we could both use a pick-up this morning!”

“Haha thanks! Sorry for being a brat and demanding you get us coffee.”

“What?! You didn’t say anything. I was just being a good best friend.”

“Ok, still, I’ll ask earlier next time. At least let me know what I owe you.”

“Sara, you didn’t even ask, you’re fine. And you don’t owe me anything, I like doing nice things for you, you’re my best friend.”

Why was she being weird? Of course I asked.

Do I show her the messages or just move on?
