Samantha's mother has gotten sicker

"It's my mom," Samantha says. She goes on to tell you that her mother, who she's told you is sick isn't doing well. It's not looking good for her. Samantha says that they have some surgeries and medications that can help, but it's all very expensive.

"My sister Claire, well she barely can take care of herself, she's pretty young and immature. And don't get me started on Jimmy. He's so unhelpful. So it's really up to me to help my mom."

A black tear rolls down from Samantha eye, and when she wipes is away it streaks across her face. You feel bad that her beautiful make-up is causing a mess on her face.

"Samantha, I'm so sorry about all this. I want you to know that I fully support you." Samantha cries more as you tell her this. "If you need to take some time off, please let me know. If you need to help your mom go to doctors appointments, you know you can do that. I know what a good, hard worker you are. I don't worry about that."

After a moment Samantha gets control of herself and wipes away more tears - creating more black streaks. You have to admit there's something very sexy about Samantha's tear-stained look.

"I really appreciate all of that John, I really do. But the problem is that's not enough. It's not just time and flexibility I need. I need money. I need to ask you for a raise."

You tell Samantha that you understand that, but Google policy is to be really strict about raises. It's all controlled to help with equity - which means, for instance, White men don't make more and get bigger raises, than say Black women. Samantha nods along, understanding. You tell her you really wish you could give her a raise, but pivot to reiterating giving her off-the-record time off whenever she needs it.
