Because she Technique tore into the Flesh of the Hand using it, it destroyed tissue, Cells, and Nerves in the Hand, and possession of the Wood-Style was like a protective glove, that vastly decreased such damage.

As for the need of the Sharingan however, it was because like the Chidori it had to go in Single Direction and only the Sharingan's Predictive Capabilities and enhanced Reflexes made it safe to use. The big difference though, was the fact that the user of the SLD Technique had to Physically Power it up with a consistent and graceful Rotation up until the Final Strike. The reasoning was that it Amplified the Lightning through such rotations, and when it was finally connected to an Enemies body, it had it's full strength behind it.

Shisui started it on a few trees, he found that his hand Had more damage than when his father had shown it to him, but his Father was a Half-Senju/Half-Uchiha, which meant the Toll was likely much less, whereas Shisui was only One Qaurter-Senju, Two Qaurter-Uchiha, and One Qaurter-Hyūga.
