While the exact nature of the Corrupting Influence is left to the individual author two major points should always be true

It provides a subtle influence on individuals around them rather than direct mind control. This is so that characters retain agency and that actions taken by the corrupted are ultimately on them

How quickly it corrupts and how it looks is up to the author, but it must corrupt the user gradually degrading their morals

You are free to put this into established settings, or genres other than modern fantasy as long as the above is followed
