Chapter 4 by my_comp_uter my_comp_uter

What would you like to learn more about?

Researchers

“I’d like to know more about being a Researcher,” you reply curiously.

Adam gives you excited smile before responding, “Great. Researchers are the ones that are really able to make momentous change in our society. As the name suggests, being a Researcher means that you are choosing a path in science, experimentation, and research. This means that you will be at the forefront of understanding how we can manage our population better and discover other advances that we can make to the Daniel’s Injection to better serve our purposes.

If you do choose this path, it will be a minimum 5-year commitment to the research laboratory. You will not be allowed to quit before the end of the 5-year commitment but you are free to extend it if you wish. As such, the 2-year time frame for procreation will be extended to 5 years for you so that you can focus on your research.

However, I must warn you that this job does come with some drawbacks.

First of all, this role will challenge your views on ethics and morality. Given that a lot of the research done will be around the gray areas of morality, you will be **** to make significant trade-offs that affect the lives of many volunteers / test subjects. You must be willing to be objective for the sake of Science.

Second, during the course of your tenure at the laboratory, if for any reason you are no longer able to fulfill your role as a researcher or fail to develop anything substantial within the 5-year period, you might end being a test subject instead. While this does not happen too often, a good 30% of people who become researchers do not finish the 5-year commitment. To compensate for this risk though, researchers are given a lot of perks. Not only do you get access to top notch laboratory facilities, you are also given a generous grant to fund your chosen field of research. You will also be introduced to more experienced scientists who can help you design your research and mentor you through the process. Best of all, you will be given a generous monthly stipend to cover all of your monthly expenditures.

Lastly, due to the competitive nature of this field, we have known of many researchers who have resorted to covert means to get ahead. There are many friends in this field but also many enemies. Beware who you trust."

What would you do next?
