Chapter 7 by edk edk

How should Haley cause the 'fated' meeting?

Remind John about his To-Buy list.

I wish I could push the two into each other like the movies but my less than physical form leaves a problem. I do have one thing I can use though: John's memory.

"John." I called from the microphone headset he had attached to his cellphone, "don't forget to check into Mighty vol. 3 and Mage."

"Thank you Haley." John said quietly as he checked the shelves under the M section. "They're not here." He mumbled. I only had a few seconds before Melanie hid herself away again so I had to hurry.

"According to their website they do have them. Maybe you should ask an employee?" And then John saw Melanie rushing towards the door right next to him.

"Excuse me!" John called quickly, hoping she would hear him. And unfortunately for Melanie, she did. Stopping less than two feet from the door, Melanie turned her head towards John to acknowledge him. "You wouldn't happen to have Mighty vol. 3 or Mage would you?" Melanie paused before nodding towards the door indicating their location. Holding up a single finger, Melanie disappeared into the backroom only to return moments later with both books. "Thank you." John said happily as he added them to his armful. "By the way," John called as Melanie once again tried to escape, "I love your shirt. Big fan of Wilderness."

Melanie paused, her head turning back towards John. "Y-you are?" John nodded happily, glad to talk to someone about his hobbies. "Th-thank you." Melanie mumbled with a small smile and large blush.

"Yeah, sucks it didn't go longer." John said as Melanie nodded. Hesitantly, Melanie held up her finger again before heading into the backroom. Emerging, she now carried a thick hardcover book that caused John's eyes to widen. "Holy shit! Is that...?" John trailed off and I understood why. Melanie was showing him a very rare book, one that only had a few thousand copies made. Compared to most, it was practically the Holy Grail to comic collectors.

"H-here." Melanie said, almost throwing the book into John's hands. "I-is there anything el-else I can get you?" She stuttered quietly. John could only shake his head slowly in stunned surprise.

"N-no. Thank you so much. I've been trying to find this for years." John said with his brightest smile yet. Melanie's blush turned nearly atomic and I could have cried with joy. Turning to the counter, John's smile wouldn't leave his face as the hippy rang him up.

"Was that all?" The hippy asked just to make sure before giving the price at John's nod, "300 dollars and 25 cents please." John quickly swiped his card. "Thank you." The cashier said as the transaction completed.

"No, thank you. You guys have been a lot of help." John exclaimed a little too loudly. The hippy's bushy eyebrow rose and I was happy to see Melanie's slightly knotted hair appear in the doorway like a curious child.

"Guys?" The cashier replied before realizing who else was still there. "You mean Melanie? I'm very sorry, sir. She's...not used to people." The man hurriedly explained, hoping the odd girl in the back hadn't scared away such a big spender.

"Are you kidding? She was so helpful I've gotta come back. This was some of the best service I've ever had!" Oh John, my beloved John, you know exactly what to say. The security cameras in the back were black and white but were they in color I know that the bright blush and surprisingly big smile would have blinded them. "In fact," Reaching forward, John grabbed and filled out a quick customer rewards card, "I'll be back as much as I can." With a wave, John took his new purchases (and card) and walked out the door.

The first meeting was a success! Now what should Haley do next?
