Chapter 3

What do I say to Bree?
Reach out and touch someone
I am crying on my adoptive mother's shoulder. Why am I doing that? I was walking home alone in the midst of two loving couples that I set up and it made me lonely. The person who I love the most, Bree Powers, is back in New York and I have not seen her since the office Christmas party. I miss her so much that she is all I can think about right now. Now that I think about it, I really should have called her during the break. Mom has taken a handkerchief from her purse and is using it to wipe my eyes. She then goes back to patting her head which is resting on her shoulder. I don't know what I would do without my mother. I would be lost without her.
"Are you okay?" Mom asks as the snow falls around us.
"I'm not jealous!" I unintentionally snap.
"I never said that you were," Mom placated me while kissing my forehead.
"I'm sorry," I apologized.
"Don't be," my loving caretaker hushes me.
"I'm just lonely," I speak as a tear falls out of my eye.
"Do you have a special someone in your life?" Mom prodded.
"Maybe there is," I guessed.
"Do I know him?" she questions.
"No, you don't know her," I corrected.
"Oh, her," Mom replied in a little bit of shock.
"You don't mind, do you?" I pressed while looking in my mother's eyes.
"No, I think you should be with whomever you care about," Mommy replied.
"She is one of my coworkers and her name is Bree," I declared.
"I am not surprised that something like this happened," Mom grumbled.
"Why?" I probe as my tears finally start to die down.
"You have spent so much time matchmaking for your family and taking care of us that you seem to have forgotten to care of yourself all through break," Mom chastised me. "You need to find a happy medium between the two."
"I'll try," I promised.
"Have you called her at all since you came home?" Mom wondered.
"No," I sigh since I regret it now.
"If I were you, I would take care of that as soon as you can," my female parent advised. "It would be a good idea to buy her a Christmas present too."
"What do you think I should get her?" I interrogated.
"You know what she would like more than I would since I have never met her," Mom reminded me. "Why don't you go into town today and see what they have."
"I'll do that,
"Is Bree into women?" Mom asked.
"She has flirted with me a couple of times and we danced together at the office Christmas party," I reveal.
"That is a good sign," Mom replies.
I finally feel well enough to travel so I go home. I am so tired when I get there that I immediately get changed into some pj's and sleep on the couch. I usually have a little bit of trouble falling asleep in these circumstances, but not today. I wake up at six when Mom starts making breakfast. I hear Nick and Charles talking to my Mom in the kitchen so I know that my bedroom is empty which means I have a place to call Bree in private. I snatch my cell phone from the living room table and I march myself into my room. I dial the numbers and I hope that Bree was home. I realize that I didn't ask her what her Christmas plans were.
"Hello?" Bree speaks on the other end of the line.
"It's me," I answer.
"What took you so long to get in touch with me, Cynthia?" Bree asks with a stern tone.
"There was a lot of stuff going on," I mention. "I'm sorry."
"I'll forgive you just this once," Bree teases me with a laugh.
"Are you busy tomorrow night?" I probe.
"You can have dinner with me at my apartment," Bree offers.
"I'd like that," I accept. "And, Bree..."
"Yeah," my friend asks.
"I miss you," I flirt.
"I miss you more," She flirts back. "Bye!"
I hang up the phone and try to decide what belated Christmas present to buy Bree.
