Chapter 5
by bsnick
Who pays the cabbie?
Rachel will, but it doesn't go well.
Cecilia quickly followed Katrina as Rachel asked, "How much is it?" The scruffy looking bear of a man had been leering back at them the whole ride, and she could swear the Katrina would wink at him those times when she was patting Rachel's thigh.
"Forty bucks," he said in a thick accent from who-knew-where. Rachel didn't really care, choosing to glare at him in outrage.
"Forty? The ride wasn't that long. There's no way I'm paying forty!"
The man glared, and she fought the urge to cave or apologize or squirm. Her instincts were to cave and just pay, but every now and then she'd use her backbone. Unfortunately it was usually at the wrong time and in the worst situations.
"Sixty bucks," he hissed.
"Sixty?" she squeaked, cleared her throat. "Listen, I'm not paying you more than twenty, so take that!"
Inside she quailed at the look he gave her, but she stuck to her guns, jutting out chin, and incidentally her chest, to emphasize it.
When the cab burst into abrupt motion she slammed back into the seat, her demeanor changing to alarm. She twisted to look out the window, immediately spotting Katrina. She seemed to be looking straight at Rachel, and her face wore an expression of glee. Rachel couldn't understand it. Katrina must have been looking at someone else, like maybe a celebrity?
"What... where are you taking me?" she asked with a quaver in her voice.
What is his answer?
