What's next?
Alarm Bells Ring!
As you are holding Yvette a loud bell rings from outside. You aren't sure why, but you know it can't be for a mundane reason.
"Yvette I need you to listen to me very carefully. We're going to get dressed quickly and I want you to put your sword on. Grab your pack and then I want you to stick with me as much as possible. We're going to go see what is going on, and if what I think is happening is happening, we're going go to Annabel and Jane to get out of here. If we get separated I want you to head south of town. In the hills there is a stand of trees. Wait there and I will find you. Do not wait around in town putting yourself in danger." you state with seriousness in your voice. Yvette nods her head in acceptance and starts moving to go get dressed. You stand and gather your clothes to get dressed. By the time you are finished Yvette is fully dressed with the pack on her back and sword on her hip. You quickly sling the pack over your back and equip your own sword.
"Ready" you ask her. Yvette takes a deep breath.
"Yes" she nods.
"Ok, stay close to me, keep aware of your surroundings, and don't hesitate to protect yourself" you tell her.
"Do you think it is a raid" Yvette asks you and you can see the fear in her eyes. You briefly remember what she has gone through before you answer.
"Yes, I think the town is being raided. Just know that I will not abandon you" you tell her. You can see the conflict in her eyes, but she closes them tightly for a moment. When she opens them up again you can see determination in her face.
"Let's go then" you say opening up the door to your room.
As you open the door you can hear screams and commotion coming from outside the inn. Something large runs past the inn, but you couldn't see what it was. The innkeeper is watching the commotion from a window by the front door with a big warhammer in his hands. He briefly acknowledges you are both there before watching out the window again.
"What's going on" you ask him.
"It's a raid" he grunts "A big one" he adds.
"Fuck" you say as your fear is confirmed.
"I'd rather it was a fire too" the innkeeper chuckles. He looks you two over again and sees you are geared up.
"Are you two heading out into that" he motions his head at the window.
"Yep" you grin.
"I wouldn't recommend it, but I can't stop you from being stupid. Once you guys leave I'm locking the door behind you" he says.
"You should probably put a table behind it as well" you tell him.
"I might just do that. Good luck my friend" he says moving to the door.
You and Yvette move to the door. You unlock it and open it a crack to peer outside a bit. You don't see anything but some dead townsfolk laying in the street so you open it farther to get a better look. You can see some fighting going on farther down the road towards the entrance of town you came through, but there doesn't appear to be any immediate threat near you.
"Let's go Yvette" you motion her to you. You both slip outside and the door closes behind you. You hear the locks being put in place again, so the two of you start towards Jane's place. The road is fairly empty as most seem to have taken refuge inside a building, but occasionally you'll see someone scurrying from building to building. The majority of the fighting seems to be taking place closer to the edges of town, but you know that won't last for long. Almost as if they heard your thoughts three raiders pop out around the corner of a building in front of you.
You have no where to hide so you draw your sword and hear Yvette draw hers as well. The raiders spot you and start running your way howling as they wave their weapons around in the air. They were lightly armored by scraps they had pieced together it looks like, and their swords were chipped and rusty. They looked skinny and malnourished, which is probably why they are raiding, and their eyes showed their murderous intent. The first raider held his sword high and then swung at you as he ran. You ducked under his blow and brought your sword up to connect with his stomach. His momentum slid himself along the edge of your blade as you felt it bite through his armor and into his stomach. The raider let out an "Oof" sound as the blade opened up his guts and he fell to the ground holding his stomach. The other two raiders stalled their advance, but you didn't let them regroup their thoughts. You jabbed the tip of your sword at the closest raider's head in a feint he fell for. He swung his sword downwards to challenge your blow, but you halted your thrust before he made contact. His sword swung downwards with the force he put behind it opening him to an attack, and you extended your thrust again making contact with his chest. You stepped forward driving your sword into his heart.
The raider crumpled and fell to the ground pulling your sword along with him as the muscles had contracted onto the blade. You attempted to yank your sword free but it remained stuck for the moment. The other raider saw his opportunity to attack you and stepped forward with his sword held high in the air to bring down on you. You focused your magic through your left hand and a gout of flame struck him in the chest. You saw the confusion and surprise in his eyes before the fire overtook his head. He dropped his sword and ran screaming out into the street fully consumed by the fire as he waved his arms around in a futile attempt to save himself. Focusing back on your sword you put your foot on the raider and pulled it from his chest. Worried about Yvette you turned to look at her, but she had her back to you with her sword raised defensively for any attacks from behind. The flaming raider staggered forward into both of your view and finally fell forward onto the ground dead. You quickly realized you'd just killed three people, but you pushed the thought out of your head for now.
"Let's keep moving" you tell Yvette and she nods turning around and falling in step behind you. Knowing the raiders are starting to move through the town you pick up your step a bit. You round the corner and Jane's shop comes into view out in the distance. Your heart drops a little as you see the shop's door is wide open, but you keep moving forward. About half way there you see someone running down the street in front of the shop. They make it to the front of the shop before a raider on a Pachycephalosaurus closes the gap on the man and launches a spear into his back and continues running through the street laughing and hollering at his fun. The man falls face first into the ground and doesn't move. You both close the gap to him and confirm there is nothing you can do for him.
You hear the same laughter and hollering as the raider on the Pachy rounds the corner again. His eyes go wide in excitement as two new victims are before him. He draws his sword and charges his Pachy towards you.
"Get in the shop" you tell Yvette and she rushes past you into the shop, but only enough to be out of immediate danger. You put a foot on the man's back and wrench the spear out of his back. Raising it above your head you take some steps forward and hurl it towards the fast approaching raider. The spear strikes the Pachy in the chest causing the Pachy to stumble forward. The end of the spear catches the ground causing the spear to push deeper and the Pachy to vault into the air over the spear. The raider's eyes go wide as he is flung forward out of his saddle and he tumbles hard into the ground ending up a few paces from you. Dazed and confused he tries to get his bearings, but you don't let that happen. You step forward and slash your sword across his neck almost beheading him. His movements cease as he falls dead to the ground.
You don't wait to find out if more are coming so you quickly turn and enter the shop.
