Chapter 76 by robyna

You're not dead but you might as well be if they book you. What next?

Charlotte's aunt steps in

"What the hell is going on here?" From nowhere, Charlotte's aunt, along with a gaggle of bridesmaids, peers through the still-open hotel-room door.

"We're going to have to ask you to stand clear," one of the cops said. "We have a situation here."

"Really? It looks to me like you busted in on a young couple having a good time." She swings her gaze at Charles. "Do not tell me that you bribed these officers to harass my niece and her boyfriend."

"Of course not." Charles is a pretty good liar but you can see she's hit home.

"Ma'am," the cop says, "it's a crime to falsely accuse an officer of the law of accepting a bribe."

"Look, officer," she says, "I'm a lawyer and I know what's legal and what isn't legal. I get that you went along with this man because he's successful, the casino wants to make him happy and they're the biggest taxpayers in the county, and because you don't like the idea of someone stealing someone else's wife. But this girl is not his wife. She was engaged to him but she obviously realized she was making a mistake. Now, I understand you chose not to arrest Charles for violating public decency but you can't just arrest people because he's slipped you a few bills or because he makes the casino happy."

"That's twice you've accused us of taking bribes," the cop growled.

"Charles," she says, "do you really want to play this out? Do you want to suffer the humiliation of your ex-fiancée explaining she dumped you because she caught you screwing a stripper? Do you want to tell your congregation back home that your wife-to-be chose an unemployed programmer over you? Do you want to be called into court to swear an oath before God himself that you didn't slip a few bills to these kind gentlemen... obviously only because you were worried about the safety of my niece but how it look to those who are less sure of your virtue?"

"Uh, yes. Of course this is all about Charlotte's safety," Charles says. "Now that I see she's as safe as a fallen woman can be, I suppose it's time to turn the matter over to her father. You may leave, officers."

The cops hadn't liked being accused of accepting bribes. They didn't look like they were especially happy being told to buzz off... but Charles eventually handed over a few more hundred dollar bills and the cops left.

"I'm going with Mike," Charlotte said. "No way am I going to let anyone turn anything over to my father."

Well, shit. You hadn't planned on adding another women to your gathering. While the girls went along with the whole dancing thing... in exchange for free drinks, you're not sure they'll be so happy to have another female in the small cabin... and the only bed.

Do you take Charlotte along or reject her?
