Sarah looked puzzled. "Well I couldn't exactly tell him the truth, could I? That I was a newly divorced 24 year old woman pretending to be the 18 year old daughter of my ex-husband?" she scoffed. "So he got the story we agreed on when we started this months ago - that I'm your daughter, or 'foster-daughter' to people who we get close to."

She smirked and her eyes twinkled. "And Jay and I are VERY close. So I want to go celebrate my new status with him."

Tom struggled to process this. He didn't expect the wish to have such subtle and far-reaching implications. He was glad he was cautious and kept the last wish more restrained. But he was also disappointed that Sarah was going out tonight after sending him such strong signals.

She rolled her eyes at Tom's look of frustration. "Okayyy, Daaad," she said in an exaggerated but very teenage tone. "I guess I can have him over instead. That way you can at least listen in," she teased.
