Chapter 11

A talk
After a quick wardrobe change, you whip up some food, nothing too interesting, but both the girls clear their plates. You were never very good at cooking, but at least Jinx seemed happy with your promise of a cooked dinner.
"They planned this", Raven said, "They deliberately triggered the bank's alarm knowing we would show up." you were both sitting away from Jinx, who was cleaning up the glass from the TV.
"They knew you would show up, but I was a surprise to them, and don't you find it a bit too convenient that this happened when four of the main members are currently out of the city?"
Raven nodded. "Yes, something is definitely wrong; but, we have another situation to deal with."
"Wonderful", you groan.
"Just what are we going to do with 'her'?" Raven gestured towards Jinx, who was out of earshot.
"Until we know any better, she's on our side."
"We can't trust her."
"She saved my life."
She pauses for a moment.
"Before the main guy could end me, she blasted him away. I would've had a new hole in my head if she didn't save me."
With a defeated sigh, Raven agrees.
"So, where is she going to sleep?"
After a delightful conversation about the living arrangement, it was agreed that you would all share the same floor so that Raven could keep an eye on Jinx. Raven started to move some of her things to her new room while Jinx did some 'redecorating'. Luckily for you, this was your floor anyway, so you didn't need to move anything.
It was late night again. You haven't slept now for almost three days, the fight from the bank playing over and over again in your head. You had been trying to clear your mind with meditation. You had just gotten settled, so it came as a shock when you heard a knock on your door, "it's open", you say without opening your eyes.
"Doing some yoga, new guy?" you hear Jinx say in her teasing voice.
"Already breaking a rule, Jinx?"
Hearing the door close, Jinx moves to the end of your bed as you open your eyes to watch her. "Yep, you're not gonna throw me off the building, are you?" she said like an innocent schoolgirl.
"Haven't decided yet, something wrong?" you ask now, finally looking up to see her face staring at you with interest.
"I can't get a read on you."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean that I haven't met someone like you before. One minute you are stoic and mysterious, and the next, you crack a joke and act like an idiot."
"Must be part of my charm."
"See, that's precisely what I'm talking about. You're up in the middle of the night doing yoga in a dark room."
"It's meditation, and we all need hobbies, plus we've only just met there's more to me than jokes, not a whole lot more but still more."
"Like what" Jinxs crosses her arms with a smile, it's clear she won't leave anytime soon, and you could do with a break. "OK fine. I'll tell you more about me if you do the same. Deal?"
"Deal", Jinx said, sounding more excited than she meant to.
You moved up to sit on the bed, and Jinx moved to be next to you
"So, what made you want to be a hero?"
"A lot of things"
"What kind of answer was that?" she asked, annoyed.
"An honest one?"
"Where are you from?"
"Somewhere, far away."
Jinx sits up her face looking frustrated, "OK then, what were you doing before coming to a stop me and bird brain fighting? And I swear if you give me a stupid answer, I'm going to do something."
I hold my hands in the air. "OK fair point, I was training."
"Training for what?"
"Mostly hand to hand combat, but it heavily implements lethal takedowns, so I was modifying it to be more passive. Mostly through adding pressure points to keep someone down, just not forever."
Jinx scoffs, "Ya like that actually works."
"Oh, you doubt me, young butterfly," you say in a poor Asian accent, sounding funny with just a hint of racism.
"OK, my question, what made you want to be a supervillain?"
Her playful expression quickly changed, and you sensed you had hit a sore subject. Before you could say anything else, she started to speak, but her voice was soft. "My powers cause bad luck. No matter what I do, I cause problems, so what choice did I have in life?"
Jinx had brought her knees to her chest and was hugging them. "All I do is cause bad things to happen to everyone around me, so being a villain makes sense. What good could I do?"
"You saved my life. Seems pretty heroic to me." she clicked her teeth, "Don't patronise me, I know I'm a villain, I'm not ashamed of being evil."
"You're not evil Jinx, a bitch? Most definitely. But not evil." you give her a smile and place a hand on her shoulder. She gives a weak smile, "I still can't read you, but I think I'm starting to understand you a bit more." Jinx got to her feet and leaned in close to you and, in a flash, planted a soft kiss on your cheeks before heading towards the door.
"See you tomorrow, big boy." and with a cheeky wink, the door closed.
