Chapter 12
Are her belongings there?
Only her phone
Letting the door close behind her, Kate looked around the bathroom. Obviously, Winnie had thrown away her real clothes, but her purse had to be here somewhere!
Kate looked all over the bathroom, checking every stall and under the sinks. Bit no matter where she looked, her belongings were nowhere to be found. Kate was just about to give up when she saw her phone at the base of a nearby trash can. Letting out a squeal of excitement, the little woman happily scooped it up. Her happiness wavered a little as she saw that her battery read "31%".
Kate also noticed that she had a new message in her inbox. Nervously, she pressed play as she put the phone on speaker.
"Ms. Ambers!" The voice of Ms. Townsend called out from the phone, her voice cold and stern. "Where have you been?! I told you to wait outside my office while I retrieved the papers for you to sign, and when I came back out, you were nowhere to be seen! I am a very busy woman, and I do not appreciate having my time wasted! If this was all some practical joke to you, then, I'm terribly sorry, but we will NOT be requiring your services here at Bryson Elementary. Good day to you, Ms. Ambers."
Kate felt her stomach drop as the message ended. All because of that stupid woman mistaking her for a student, she had just lost her new job before she even began it! This couldn't possibly -
Kate's thoughts died when she heard her phone ring. Looking down at her screen, Kate saw that it was her landlord's number. Shaking nervously, she answered it.
"Kate, where are you?!" A female voice snapped over the phone.
"M-Mrs. Vanderbilt!" Kate stammered, "I'm at a potential - "
"Never mind!" Mrs. Vanderbilt snapped again. "I'm just calling to ask if you have removed everything of value from your house and to remind you to swing by my house to hand over your key. And you BETTER not have lost it again, because I'm not making you another one this time!"
"W-what?" Kate asked, confusion in her voice. "Why would I need to - "
"Don't you remember?" Mrs. Vanderbilt asked, clearly annoyed. "You're being evicted today."
"WHAT?!" Kate yelped, her shocked and horrified voice echoing in the empty bathroom. "That can't be true! I know I'm behind on my rent, but the letter said I had until April 10th to pay it back in full!"
"It IS April 10th, Kate!" Mrs. Vanderbilt stated flatly, "That letter was from last month."
"No! PLEASE!" Kate begged into the phone, her voice shaking. "You need to give me more time! Yes, I know that I procrastinated a bit while looking for work, but I'm literally at - "
"I gave you more than enough time than necessary, Kate!" Mrs. Vanderbilt argued, "The repo men already took your stuff. Just stay with a friend for a few days, and remember to drop off my key if you haven't lost it again. Goodbye."
"No! Mrs. Vanderbilt, wait I - " Kate tried to say, only to be cut off by a beep as her former landlady hung up. Her screen then went black, briefly flashing a dead battery symbol before dying completely.
Kate fell to her knees, a look of horror on her face. In the span of one day, she had been mistaken for a child, stripped, spanked, diapered, enrolled into a kindergarten class, lost her job before she even started it, and now she was homeless to boot!
Kate shakily got back up to her feet, sniffling as she was on the verge of tears. The little woman turned on her heel as she made to leave the bathroom... Only to stop and gasp as she saw someone standing in front of the bathroom door.
Who was it?
