The whole truth…
Winter and Miranda’s secret past
Winter led Mark straight into her room, he couldn’t wait to get in just to hear what this was all about.
“Natalie not here?” he asked as they closed the door once inside.
“She went to see family for the mid semester break. It’s just me here this week,” Winter said, locking her dorm room door before sitting on the opposite bed to Mark.
“Fair enough. Anyways, can you help me understand what’s going on here?”
Winter took a deep breath, “Alright, well it’s a long story but I’ve been hiding a secret of Miranda’s for years.”
Mark shuffled himself on the bed to get a bit more comfortable as Winter shared her story.
“Miranda and I have known each other for a long time, we went to the same high school,” she said.
Looking quite surprised at first, Mark started to figure this out. He knew Miranda was a Michigan girl through and through but also knew that Winter’s family moved states quite a bit. He hasn’t really thought about the chances of them going to the same high school in the same state while she was living there.
“We were friends, legitimately,” she said, shocking Mark further, “We actually did everything together, we’d go to each other’s houses all the time, ironically we’d confine in each other with all our secrets. You know, typical best friends stuff.”
Mark sat by blown away to hear this, still wondering where this all went wrong, “And something happened? Cause you and her couldn’t be further from friends. Right from the moment I met you here and we ran into her on that first day.”
“Yeah, it was dumb. I remember it like it was yesterday. We had raided Miranda’s parents **** cabinet, drinking in town to avoid them catching us. That’s when we got silly, we needed more to drink and I thought we could just break into this local liquor store through the back.”
Mark interrupted for a second, “Wait, you broke into a store? How drunk were you’s?”
“Look, not that much but enough to make dumb decisions, we just wanted to take like one bottle of wine,” she said before continuing the story, “Anyways, she agreed, we had to sneak in through this really high window out the back. Miranda got inside first but as soon as she did, this alarm was set off and she was stuck inside.”
As she spoke, Mark could tell that it was a little difficult for Winter to speak about this, whatever happened next, she had some sort of guilt.
“I tried to help her, I did, I tried pulling her back up but I just couldn’t. When I heard the sirens in the distance, that’s when I panicked, I left her to avoid getting in any trouble. She’s never forgiven me for it.”
“What about the **** thing? You said something about **** and a criminal record?” he asked her, heavily invested in the story.
“Well after I disappeared and the cops arrived, she must have panicked trying to get away from them. I obviously didn’t see it happen but Miranda slapped one of the officers when she attempted to escape. Hard enough that it was considered **** against a police officer. She ended up with an official criminal record from it.”
It was a bizarre story to hear but things did start to make a little more sense, especially with how random their rivalry seemed at first.
“Wow, that’s crazy, I’m a little shocked, I really didn’t expect this,” he replied to her.
Winter modded, “It didn’t end there, she was angry with me for ditching her after it was my idea and rightfully so but she wanted to get me back for it. My high school boyfriend at the time, Miranda slept with him while sending me Snapchat’s of it. It really hurt.”
Mark came over to the other bed to comfort her. “Jesus, I’m sorry to hear about that,” he told her.
It wasn’t the first time that Miranda would do it and it finally hit Mark on why Miranda wanted to get with him so much as soon as she found out that Winter had a thing with him.
Things were starting to make a little more sense, like putting the last pieces of a complicated puzzle together. Finally it made sense why these two hated each other so much. It wasn’t just a petty jealousy thing about having to compete against each other for having the better rack.
They actually had a very long history together.
“So after all of this? You still promised to keep her secret about the **** charges, did she ask you to?” Mark asked curiously.
Winter nodded, “Well I still feel bad about it today but yeah I promised her after she confronted me in a private conversation that I wouldn’t say anything about it. And she’s still pushed me and pushed me and pushed me until I couldn’t help myself any more.”
Staying by her side, Mark did what he could to comfort her. Keeping her focus on her and not that massive rack that was on clear display in that dress.
“It’s completely understandable,” he told her, “She’s been an absolute bitch to you.”
Winter gave him a bit of a smile as she leaned her head on his shoulder. It was nice a little moment for the both of them.
