Yes, pulled over

"License and registration, please." The stocky female office said to Paul. They had been after the handsome man, it seemed. Alexa sat in the back, meekly and trying not to take up any more space than necessary. Once everything checked out, the officer made one last glance into the car. "Just a speeding ticket today sir. Now, if you don't mind me asking, could you roll your back window down?"

Paul did so, eager to not displease the officer. She stared at Alexa, looking her up and down. "Hi there sweetie. You should be in a car seat, don't you think?"

"Uh, ma'am. She's 24. I don't think she is in need of a car seat, or that tone." Carol said, annoyed at having been pulled over in the first place. Now, her friend was being disrespected like that.

"Oh. Apologies, Miss..." Alexa gave her last name. "Johnson. But, state law is that anyone who's feet can't touch the floor of the backseat need some form of extra protection in case of a wreck."

"That's frankly ridcolous. She's an adult. A belt is fine, is it not?" Paul said, annoyance evident in his voice.

"I don't make the laws, I just enforce them sir." The officer said, shrugging her shoulders. "Now, I could write you a ticket for improper driving, since you have someone improperly secured in your vehicle. Or, I can accompany you to make sure you get a car seat for her."

"I'd like a supervisor, please. That law doesn't sound right. An adult in a car seat?" Carol said.

The supervisor agreed with the lower ranking officer. "I'm sorry ma'am. It's a law from the 60's. We have to enforce it, even if it makes no sense in this case. A Booster seat should be fine."

"This is absurd. I mean, she's an adult who can drive a vehicle, but has to be in a booster seat?" Paul said, as Alexa shrank further into her seat. He sounded pissed, just if only out of the principle of it. "Besides, it's about like two damn inches off the ground. Come on."

"Paul, relax." Carol said. He took a breath, and the officers explained they could follow him to a nearby store to get a booster seat for Alexa. All parties, except Alexa, were in agreement with the plan. She was rightfully horrified at the prospect of being stuck in a booster seat in the back of a vehicle.

Arriving to the closet store, Carol went in with the officers to get a booster seat. Paul stayed in the car with Alexa, her discomfort obvious.

"I'm sorry about this. I really am." He said. Alexa accepted his apology, but told him it wasn't his fault. The two talked a bit about business, which calmed the man down minorly, and which distracted Alexa.
